Arizona Wildcats tab former Nevada coach Jay Johnson to lead baseball program

Jun 7, 2015, 7:06 PM | Updated: 7:06 pm

The University of Arizona has found a new head coach for its baseball program.

University director of athletics Greg Byrne announced Sunday that the school had lured Jay Johnson from the University of Nevada to lead Arizona’s program.

Johnson had led the Wolf Pack’s baseball team for the past two years, leading them to a 72-42 record. He was previously an assistant coach at San Diego from 2006-13.

Johnson was named the 2015 Mountain West Coach of the Year, and he led Nevada to the school’s first-ever Mountain West Conference championship that same year.

UA will hold a press conference Monday afternoon in Tucson to introduce its new program head.

Johnson replaces school legend Andy Lopez, who retired last month after being at the helm of the program for 14 years, including leading the Wildcats to a national championship in 2012.
