Trumbo, Arizona Diamondbacks delay Cards’ celebration: By The Numbers

They have baseball’s worst record, but on Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks ensured that their final game of the 2014 season will be a meaningful one.

The D-backs prevented the St. Louis Cardinals from clinching the National League Central division with a 5-2 victory Saturday night that was propelled by three home runs, including a pair by Mark Trumbo — his 13th and 14th of the season.

It was Trumbo’s three-run shot in the seventh inning off reliever Seth Maness that broke a 2-2 tie and kept division championship hopes alive for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who trail the Cardinals by one game in the NL Central heading into the final day of the regular season.

The D-backs got going quickly on Saturday, as David Peralta and Trumbo launched back-to-back solo homers in the first inning off St. Louis starter Lance Lynn (15-10), who earned a no-decision.

D-backs starting pitcher Wade Miley (8-12) didn’t factor in the decision, either, but he allowed just two earned runs on six hits in five innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked three.

Here’s how the D-backs put the Cardinals’ celebration on ice — at least for one more day — by the numbers:

The D-backs earned their first win of the season over St. Louis. The Cardinals were the last National League team that Arizona hadn’t beaten.

After going just 1-for-12 in his previous three games, Trumbo went 2-for-3 with a walk on Saturday. His four RBI on the evening increased his season total to 61.

Peralta broke out of a similar slump in his last three games (0-for-11) by recording three hits against St. Louis.

With three shutout innings on Saturday, Randall Delgado put together his fifth straight scoreless outing for the D-backs. Delgado’s ERA in September is 1.84.

Eight of the nine players in the D-backs’ batting order recorded at least one hit on Saturday. Miguel Montero (0-for-4) was the odd man out.

After allowing just two earned runs in six innings Saturday, Lynn has 16 straight starts in which he has allowed three or fewer runs.

The Cards ran up the pitch count against Miley, as the lefty threw exactly 100 pitches in his five innings of work.

Miley became just the second Diamondbacks left-hander to put in back-to-back 200-inning seasons. The other player? Some guy named Randy Johnson.
