Diamondbacks can’t muster offense against Kluber, Indians: By The Numbers

...

It wasn’t a new day, but it was a new game at Chase Field Wednesday night, when the Arizona Diamondbacks fell to the Cleveland Indians, 6-1.

The Diamondbacks’ lone run came in the bottom half of the ninth inning, eliciting memories of Tuesday night’s ninth-inning drama, but the Ender Inciarte-led rally was eventually quelled.

Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber seemed to have the Diamondbacks’ number in the contest, allowing just five baserunners to reach over his 7.0 scoreless innings. He struck out twice as many Diamondbacks batters as he did allow a hit, fanning eight.

For the Diamondbacks, Chase Anderson struggled out of the gate. Michael Bourn’s leadoff triple, just one of two to his name on the night, paid immediate dividends for the Indians, who plated a run in each of the first three innings of the game and in four of the game’s first five innings.

But the recently called-up Zeke Spruill made good work out of the bullpen, throwing just 45 pitches over four innings in a game that required deep pitching for Kirk Gibson’s side, who required nine pitchers in their 9-8 win over Cleveland the game before.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

1

Zeke Spruill’s last outing for the Diamondbacks came exactly one month ago, on May 25, when he made a spot start in New York against the Mets, allowing three earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched while taking the loss.

2

Indians centerfielder Michael Bourn hit a career-high two triples Wednesday. He collected the hits in his first two at-bats.

3

After winning each of the first five starts of his career, Diamondbacks pitcher Chase Anderson has now dropped all three of his last three starts.

6

The Indians have now won six of their last eight series finales, improving to 6-2 in their last eight games against the Diamondbacks. Wednesday’s win, however, snapped a seven-game losing streak in National League parks.

7

Ender Inciarte, who scored the Diamondbacks’ only run of the game, is hot. He has seven hits in his last 11 at-bats and he’s hitting .309 over his last 20 games.

18

Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games, after going 0-for-3 with a walk Wednesday. He has a .381 on-base percentage on the season.

28

Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero has now reached base safely in 28 of his last 30 interleague games.

44

Montero clubbed his 44th RBI of the season Wednesday in the ninth inning, now exceeding his total from all of last season by two.
