Gibson tells team: ‘Play the game the right way’

Diamondbacks pitcher Daniel Hudson sparked a firestorm on
Monday when talking to Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and
Gambo about defending his teammate Justin Upton.

“If it’s a starting pitcher, remember, he’s got to hit.
They either have to hit their spots, or they better expect
something in return.”

Tuesday, manager Kirk Gibson was asked about Hudson’s
comments and if he agrees with the way Hudson plans to
take care of business on the field.

“I’ll just tell you that as the manager I try to teach the
team to play the game the right way and there are certain
things you are better off not commenting about.”

Gibson knows that some of it has to do with Hudson’s fiery
nature and some has to do with the way he pitches.

“Daniel is very competitive and we will use both sides of
the plate. We don’t go out there and intentionally try
and hit people. It’s a dangerous thing to do,” he said.
“He does throw inside, it’s part of it. For me, I’d rather
make sure they get it inside and if you do hit a guy,
that’s part of it. You’re not aiming at a guy.”

Hudson had his own response today on Twitter after the
dust settled:
