LISTEN: Kerwynn Williams, AZ Cardinals Running Back

When at University of Phoenix Stadium, it’s not uncommon to see a fair share of Andre Ellington No. 38 jerseys.

Casual fans may recognize Stepfan Taylor’s name when he steps into the backfield.

Then, there’s the forgotten back — Kerwynn Williams.

The 5-foot-8 running back out of Utah State was an unknown when injuries forced him into the action in 2014, picking up 246 rushing yards on 53 carries for the Cardinals’ beleaguered backfield.

Throughout the offseason, many pundits have asked Cardinals coaches and officials about improving the running game, mentioning improvements from Ellington, Taylor, and 2015 third-round pick David Johnson.

However, coaches have been mindful not to leave out Williams.

“It’s always big to have the confidence of the coaches,” Williams told Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “That’s a big part of being successful in this league, and it’s definitely very humbling that they think that highly of you.”

After battling for playing time in his first season in Arizona, the battle should be even tougher for Williams with the addition of Northern Iowa’s Johnson.

“I think that’s totally up to the coaches,” Williams said. “All I can do is bring great attitude and effort to the practice field every day. That’s what I try to do, just put myself in the best position to succeed.”

In other words, Williams wasn’t fazed by the Cardinals’ addition of Johnson.

“I understand that it’s just part of the game,” Williams said. “The team’s always looking to I improve, and obviously they felt that he’d be an asset to the team. I don’t have any disputes with that. He’s a great player. You can’t be afraid of competition in this league.”
