Playoffs? Arizona Cardinals are on the verge

The Arizona Cardinals are on the precipice of reaching the postseason for the first time since 2009.

All that needs to happen is a winner (and loser) be determined in Sunday night’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.

By way of their 12-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams Thursday, the Cardinals improved to 11-3 on the season. The Cowboys and Eagles are both 9-4, and since Arizona holds the tiebreaker over each, a loss for either team would guarantee the Cardinals at least a Wild Card berth.

Of course, the Cardinals are hoping for more than just a Wild Card spot, which is why they are not quite ready to celebrate just yet.

At worst, Arizona will head into Week 16 with a one-game lead on the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West, and with the defending Super Bowl champs set to host the San Francisco 49ers, it’s very likely next Sunday’s game between the Cards and Seahawks will decide who wins the division.

Of course, that is important, because the winner is likely to not only have a first-round bye in the postseason, but also homefield advantage for at least one game.

And on that front, unless the Green Bay Packers fall on the road to the Buffalo Bills this week, they and the Cardinals will be tied for the best record in the NFC, with their battle for homefield advantage throughout the entire NFC playoffs still ongoing.
