Andre Ellington’s inclusion on the initial injury report for the Cardinals’ Week 1 matchup with the San Diego Chargers was a bit of a surprise.

A report by Cardinals insider Mike Jurecki is likely to be a big concern.

Jurecki says Ellington aggravated his left foot in practice Thursday and later underwent an MRI. He says he’s hearing the second-year running back “could be out an extended period of time.”

Losing Ellington for any stretch of time would be a significant blow to an offense that was counting on him to be not only its lead running back, but one of the focal points of the offense.

The good news may be a more recent report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport:

Last season, the sixth-round pick out of Clemson ran for 652 yards and three touchdowns while also catching 39 passes for 371 yards and one score.

The 5-foot-9, 199-pound back’s role was limited during the preseason in an effort to keep him fresh and healthy, as he received just 13 carries (which he turned into 58 yards and caught just two passes.

The Cardinals are scheduled to practice at 11:30 Friday morning and afterwards coach Bruce Arians and players will speak to the media, so an update on Ellington’s status will be given.
