July 26, 2012: Lunchtime with Whiz

FLAGSTAFF — Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt meets the media daily at lunchtime:

“Well, no decison on the quarterback yet.”

And that’s how Whisenhunt opened his Thursday afternoon press conference.

The Cardinals will practice in full pads for the first time this afternoon. “I’m expecting it to be potentially sloppy at times,” Whisenhunt said.

on the play Ryan Williams made in the team’s first practice

“No, I smiled. I didn’t suppress anything. It was nice to see. It brings back memories of what you saw last year in a short period of time and how excited you got. But I think you also have to temper that with he’s still got a little ways to go. He’s still a redshirt rookie as you would say. It’s exciting to see him out there and that’s a great sign.”

on how Greg Toler is coming along after ACL surgery last year

“It’s a process for him. I think especially at that position with as much turning and stopping and starting that you have to do as a corner that he’s got to get a feel back for it. He’s a big kid that can really run, that’s physical. He’s got to get the feel back. He’s got to be able to do some of the things that he hasn’t done.”

on whether having 10 cornerbacks on the roster is too many

“Been many times here where we’ve scrambled to try to get a corner in here to play. And it could end up being that way too. You never know how it’s going to go with injuries.
“[I] feel very good about the quality of cornerbacks that we have competing for spots out there. We’ve got some very good young players. We’ve got some strong leaders…not necessarily just the corners but the secondary in general has got the chance to be a strength for us.”

on what the depth at the cornerback position may ultimately mean

“There’s going to be a player or two, I feel like, that we’re going to release, that we’re going to have to release that’s going to be able to play for another team. That’s not something that we’ve always faced here in the last few years. We’ll see how it all pans out. We haven’t done anything yet but just from what you’ve seen, how they’ve responded in drills, the way they’re competing, I’m really looking forward to seeing how they handle themselves.”
