Mikkel Boedker again scored the first goal of a contest, but the Arizona Coyotes again weren’t able to maintain the lead by the time the final horn sounded.

The Coyotes left wing netted the only goal of the first period Tuesday against San Jose, but the visiting Sharks came out in the second and quickly tied it up and then took the lead roughly a minute later.

Shane Doan evened up the score about ten minutes after that, but the Coyotes would fail to score after that point.

The Sharks emerged at Gila River Arena by a 3-2 final, handing Arizona its second straight loss.

San Jose ended the night sixth in the Western Conference race with 51 points, having improved to 23-16-5 after beating Arizona. The Coyotes fell to 16-22-4 overall and 9-11-3 at home.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s game, by the numbers:

0-8

Arizona went 0-for-3 on the power play Tuesday, a game after going 0-for-5 with a man advantage in a loss to Ottawa. San Jose, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 on power plays in the win.

1

Defenseman Brenden Dillon’s first goal of the season made the difference for the Sharks. Dillon scored six goals last season with Dallas, but had yet to find the back of the net in 41 games with the Stars and Sharks this year — before Tuesday, that is.

1:33

It took all of a minute and 33 seconds in the second period for the Coyotes to go from ahead one goal to down one, as Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl, respectively, got the best of goaltender Devan Dubnyk in that span.

2-3

The Coyotes have just one game left — Thursday vs. Calgary — in their six-game home stand. They are 2-3 heading into the finale.

4

Boedker has gotten the puck past the goaltender four times in his last three games. On Saturday, he led off Saturday’s game against Ottawa with the first goal of the contest, but the Coyotes gave up five unanswered after that point, and he had two in last Thursday’s victory over Winnipeg. The seventh-year left wing’s goal was his 13th of the season.

9-5-2

Dubnyk fell to 9-5-2 on the season as he allowed three Sharks goals on 25 shots (an .880 save percentage). The backup goaltender has taken the loss in his last two appearances.

10

Doan’s second-period goal was his 10th of the year, and his 23rd point of the year. The Coyotes captain has reached at least 10 goals in 15 consecutive seasons. Tuesday’s goal was his second in the last three games.

22

Pavelski’s second-period goal was his 22nd of the season, which puts the Sharks center at a tie for the fifth-most in the NHL. By comparison, the Coyotes’ leader in goals scored is Boedker with 13.
