Diamondbacks make late run, but fall in extra innings to St. Louis Cardinals: By The Numbers

Sep 27, 2014, 6:17 AM | Updated: 6:45 am

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a valiant effort to erase a four-run deficit and force extra innings, but the St. Louis Cardinals didn’t let the home team drag out Friday’s game much longer than that.

Didi Gregorius and Ender Inciarte helped the Diamondbacks tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning at Chase Field, and then both teams were scoreless in the ninth — even though Arizona had two runners reach base — setting up what looked like would be a long night.

However, St. Louis started the 10th frame with a double by Matt Adams, and Jhonny Peralta quickly drove in pinch runner Daniel Descalso to put the Cardinals back on top.

Diamondbacks reliever Evan Marshall finally got out of the 10th inning, but Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal mowed down the side in order to preserve a 7-6 St. Louis victory.

Arizona fell to a league-worst 63-97, including 32-47 at home, having lost three straight and nine of its last 10 overall. Marshall took the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season.

The Cardinals’ win put them at 89-71 on the season — one game ahead of Pittsburgh for the NL Central lead.

Here’s a look at Friday’s game by the numbers:

2

Gregorius went 3-for-5 at the plate and had a rare multi-RBI night, as he knocked in two in the eighth inning with a bloop single to center. The left-handed hitter now has 27 RBI on the season and is hitting .228.

4

In six at-bats, Inciarte tied his career high with four hits, including a ground-rule RBI double that tied the game in the eighth. The rookie also scored a run while continuing his hot month, in which he is batting .304. By the way, his hitting streak is now 14 games, and his season average is .281.

7.23

D-backs starter Trevor Cahill started out strongly, giving up just one hit through his first five frames, but he only made it one out past that, and he allowed six hits, four walks and four earned runs on the night while striking out three. After a solid month of August, Cahill, who took a no-decision Friday, is 0-3 in September with a 7.23 ERA. He hasn’t pitched more than 5.2 innings in five starts this month.

57

Mark Trumbo hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning to notch his 57th RBI of the year — the fourth-highest total on the team. He’s well behind his 100 RBI pace of last season with the Los Angeles Angels, but he also missed just three games back then. The first baseman went 1-for-4 Friday with one strikeout, and he’s now batting .233 — similar to last year’s average of .234.

63

With the loss, the Diamondbacks secured the title of the worst record in the MLB this season. They would need to win their last two games to tie the amount of victories they had in their inaugural season — a mark which they also tied in 2010. If they fail to win out, it would be the second-worst season in franchise history (51-111 in 2004).

72

He’s only batting .245, but Miguel Montero went 2-for-5 Friday night and knocked in his team-leading 72nd run of the season, which is the third-highest total of his Major League career. The catcher also scored a run and struck out once against the Cardinals. On defense, he made a throwing error in the seventh inning — his 13th miscue of the season.

.200

Rookie Nick Ahmed got a rare hit and scored an important run — the one that tied the game in the eighth inning. Ahmed went 1-for-5 in the game and is now batting exactly .200.
