The Arizona Cardinals announced Tuesday that rookie tight end Troy Niklas had been placed on the injured reserve with an ankle injury.
To add depth, the team signed free agent tight end Matthew Mulligan. Milligan, 6-foot-4 and 267 pounds, played in two games for the Chicago Bears earlier this season. He was released in September.
A Maine product, Mulligan is in his sixth year in the league, having played in 67 career games, compiling 16 receptions, 160 yards and two touchdowns. In 2012 and 2013, the tight end combined to play in 31 games, including all 16 for the New England Patriots last season. He has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams.
According to a Cardinals release, Mulligan will wear jersey No. 81.
