With the Arizona Cardinals' wide receiving corps seemingly solidified heading into the 2013 season with Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Roberts and Michael Floyd, the organization reportedly intends to release veteran wide receiver Early Doucet Saturday.

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, releasing Doucet, 27, will help the team save $1.7 million as it heads into free agency.

In five years with the Cardinals, the former LSU standout had 139 catches for 1,491 yards and seven touchdowns.

While Doucet had a breakout year in 2011 (54 catches and five touchdowns), his production level dropped this past season due to the emergence of Floyd and Roberts.

Doucet was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

    That might not have been the only reason
    for the drop in production.

    yeah i agree Whatashame. Production dropped off because Floyd and Roberts emerged, or because he's hurt a lot and we didn't have a QB that could consistently make throws. hmmm...tough to tell.....LOL

    As long as we use the cap space
    I've never been a doucet fan, he was once pegged as Boldin's heir but that was quite frankly an insult to Boldin. On the rare occasion Doucet has been healthy enough to play he's looked at best mediocre, at worst, sub par, which is not good when you consider he's almost never been healthy. In 5 seasons he's managed to play in a full 16 game season only once, on any team that didn't have Wells and Williams that would look terrible. That said though, he was never BAD, I never wanted him released, so I do hope we actually use that cap space or we weakened our 4th WR spot for no reason.

    Drops = drop in production
    Even when Doucet was healthy, he had the most drops of any player in the NFL. And many were very key drops, ones which cost the Cards first downs. When you can't stay on the field, and when you're on the field you can't hold on to the ball, you're not going to be around very long.

    Fallen and Couldn't Get Up
    I'm pretty sure that picture above was when Doucet fell in the end zone on what would have been a sure TD catch to keep them alive for the playoffs in 2011. He has been largely ineffective since that season ending play for the Cards. The Cards don't need a good extra receiver, they need to invest resources in Oline and QB. Probably a smart move here to release Doucet and free up cap space.
