Most of us expect Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton to interview for some head coach jobs in the offseason.

Horton has helped transform one of the league's worst defenses into one of its best over the last two seasons, and a feat like that is not likely to go unrecognized or unrewarded.

There is some thought that perhaps the Cardinals, should they decide to part ways with Ken Whisenhunt, may look to promote the second-year coordinator.

If Whisenhunt stays, though, given the fact that Horton interviewed with the St. Louis Rams for their top job before the team chose Jeff Fisher, it stands to reason his name will be brought up when other openings arise.

"I think he can get one or two interviews, which I think is merited," ESPN NFL insider John Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Thursday. "I don't necessarily know if he's, at this stage, ready to get a head coaching job."

listen Listen: John Clayton, NFL Writer and ESPN Reporter
John Clayton joins Doug and Wolf to talk about this week in the NFL. Does John believe Ray Horton will get Head coaching considerations? John does not believe that Alex Smith can bring the 49ers to the Super Bowl. Does this mean Colin Kaepernick can lead the Niners to the "promise land"? And, John tells us why Jason Babin was cut by the Eagles. Plus, is Ben Roethlisberger going to be available this Sunday?
Clayton noted how all kinds of assistants can make the jump to the head job, whether they be offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators or even special teams coaches.

"Clearly he's put himself in a position to get the interview," Clayton said. "Ray will go and use those interviews as a good education so that he can gear himself and be ready.

"I still remember talking to a lot of young coaches and the big thing is OK, it's nice to get a job, but it's better to get a job when you're ready to be the head coach."

Clayton said Horton has learned very fast, as he was a position coach as recently as two years ago.

I dont think Whiz was ready for HC
when he was hired by AZ they continued to sucked in everything except at the QB and WR positions when 13, 15, 81, and 11 were playing together. Get Whiz players like them, does he win again? Yes. But anyone could win games with 13, 15, 81, and 11 together. Horton took over a D unit that was close to last in all defensive categories since Whiz has been here and made them what they are now #7 ovrall #22 run d and #4 pass d, IN 2 YEARS with the same players that have been here! Whiz's unit? Still 2nd to last in all offensive categories. This team loses more if they lose Horton for Whiz.

    Finally a realist
A few interviews - but not ready yet. I 100% agree with that sentiment. @FitzIsMyHero - if Horton is the Defensive Cooridinator and he is the genius behind the defense, then why do you lay the blame on the offense solely on Whiz? Is it not Mike Miller's Offense?

@mesa mad man... No-one is giving Miller a bye.
Whiz is an offensively minded head coach. He still has final say over all plays called, and although it's Millers offense in name, in practice, it's barely changed at all since 2009, when Whiz acted as HC. Moreover, it's not, the playcalling or the schemes which have been the issue—though they're part of it—but of man management. Injuries notwithstanding this season, last season, Whiz ruined both Kolb and Skelton by keeping the controversy going far too long, and then refusing to name Skelton permanent starter once Kolb went down injured, in spite of the improvement in results when he did.

    Saw this coming
I wonder how we would be if we would of just gotten Todd Haley as our offensive coordinator??, he would of brought out the best of this offense, i dont know how much, but sure would have been an upgrade

lukenb is right. Although Miller is calling the plays, Whiz has the final say in the offenses schemes & attacks. And when they're driving, he has his play sheet up and he's monitoring and managing the offensive play calling. So when something isnt working he is capable of making adjustments (which hes also failed to do in addition to a lot of other things). Its also his fault for not hiring a OC more qualified. He fired Millers dad bro! Where do you think Mike Miller learned what he knows? If his dad wasnt good enough then u think the son will be? Most of his decisions dont make sense...
