Arizona Wildcats rebound from upset loss, blow out Washington: By the Numbers

Feb 14, 2015, 4:39 AM | Updated: 7:57 am

The Arizona Wildcats had some time to rest after coming up short to underdog Arizona State last weekend in Tempe.

The time off seemed to serve Arizona well as the powerhouse program faced Washington on the road Friday night.

Washington led off with a three-pointer just 16 seconds after tipoff, but the Wildcats took an 8-7 lead a little more than five minutes later, and Sean Miller’s group never looked back.

Arizona stretched its advantage to more than 20 just after the halfway mark of the first half, and the visitors went into the break up by 19.

The Huskies whittled the lead down to 11 with a little more than eight minutes left in the contest, but Arizona dominated after that point, racing to a 86-62 victory.

The Wildcats improved to 21-3 on the season, including 9-2 in Pac-12 play, while Washington fell to 14-10 overall.

Here’s a look at Friday’s blowout, by the numbers:

2

Freshman Stanley Johnson recorded his second game of 20 or more points, and he finished just two points shy of tying his career high. Johnson shot 7-for-10 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line for a game-high 20 points. The 6-foot-7 forward also added eight rebounds, two assists and a career-high two blocks.

3-9

Despite being a few games over .500 in their overall record, the Huskies fell to a dismal 3-9 in conference Friday, the second-worst mark in the Pac-12. The team is also on a six-game losing skid.

4

Sophomore swingman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game — and for the fifth time in his last six outings. He shot 7-for-10 from the field and ended up with 17 points, his highest since Nov. 19 against UC Irvine. The 6-foot-7 standout also ripped down a team-high nine boards, in addition to having two assists, two steals and a block.

10

Point guard T.J. McConnell finished with 10 points and 10 assists, his first double-double in an Arizona uniform. The senior has scored in double-figures in five of his last seven games, and the night marked his fourth time recording double-digit assists as a Wildcat. The Pittsburgh native also pulled down five rebounds and stole the ball three times during his impressive evening.

20-10

Arizona got 20 points from its bench, while Washington’s second unit only contributed 10. Gabe York and Elliott Pitts were responsible for all of the Wildcats’ points off the pine. York shot just 3-for-10, but finished with 13 points, his first time in double-figures over his last three appearances.

21-8

Once the Huskies shrank their deficit to 11 with 8:21 to play, Arizona closed them out with a 21-8 run to finish the game. The lead only changed hands three times in the contest, and Arizona had the advantage for a total of 34 minutes and 51 seconds, going up by as much as 27 in the second half.

52.5%

The Wildcats had a very strong night from the field. Although they made just 4-of-13 three-pointers (30.8 percent), they went 31-for-59 (52.5 percent) from the field overall. Washington, meanwhile, finished a paltry 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the floor.

76.9%

UA had better luck than usual from the free throw line, making 20-of-26 attempts (76.9 percent), led by Johnson (5-for-5) and York (5-for-6). Washington was an impressive 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe, but the home team couldn’t keep up with Arizona due to a cold night from the field.
