Arizona delivers statement win, routs Colorado on the road: By the numbers

After enduring two straight overtime contests, the fourth-ranked Arizona Wildcats made sure not to mess around Saturday night at the Coors Events Center.

Despite playing inside one of the toughest venues in the conference, Sean Miller’s squad put on an absolute show, throttling the Colorado Buffaloes by a final of 88-61.

At no point in Saturday’s contest did the Wildcats ever trailed. Arizona ran out to a quick 17-3 advantage and never looked back.

Following a 69-57 loss in Tucson back on Jan. 23, Colorado’s Xavier Johnson promised a ’20-point’ blowout when the teams met in Boulder. Not only did Johnson prove to be wrong, but he struggled to have much of an impact on the game. The Wildcats held him to five points on an abysmal 1-of-10 from the floor.

The magic number for Arizona to clinch the Pac-12 regular season title has been whittled down to two. With wins this week against Cal and Stanford, the Wildcats would clinch the conference championship outright.

Making his second consecutive start, sophomore Gabe York left his imprint on the huge road victory. And he did so primarily on the glass. York grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with his four points.

It was a night of lows for Tad Boyle and Co. The Buffaloes, who finished the night shooting 32.7 percent from the field, got off to a rather inauspicious start, failing to record a single bucket over the first 10:10 of the game — a program record.

Freshman Aaron Gordon watched the final seconds from the bench, but this time it had nothing to do with foul trouble. The former McDonald’s All-American knocked down 10 of his 13 attempts, finishing the night with a career-high 23 points. Of those 10 makes, two came from downtown. Gordon also had eight rebounds.

The 27-point margin of victory was UA’s largest away from the McKale Center in 2013-14. In fact, the Wildcats’ first six road wins came by an average of just seven points.

How impressive was the Wildcats’ sweep over the Buffaloes and Utes? Heading into the weekend, the two Pac-12 foes were 32-2 at home this season.

Not only did 10 different players score in the blowout, but as a team, Arizona shot 60.5 percent from the field. Part of that average was aided by the Wildcats’ tremendous effort from three-point range, as they hit 8-of-17 from behind the arc.

In the second half alone, Arizona connected on 22-of-26 shot attempts.

For Arizona, the win was its first at Colorado since the 1972-73 season. That year, Coniel Norman scored 27 points in a 91-76 victory.
