Herb Sendek’s Arizona State tenure: By the Numbers

On April 3, 2006, Herb Sendek accepted the head coaching job at Arizona State University.
The former North Carolina State coach took over for Rob Evans, and it was hoped he would lead the program to new, better heights.
Just less than nine years later, the school announced it had relieved Sendek of his duties.
A lot happened over that time, and we’re here to take a look at his ASU tenure, by the numbers:

Sendek’s nine seasons at the helm are second in school history behind only Ned Wulk, who guided ASU hoops for 24 seasons (1957-1982).

Arizona State made the NCAA Tournament twice under Sendek, reaching the dance in 2009 and 2014.

Three who played for Sendek players have gone on to play in the NBA: James Harden, Jeff Pendergraph (now Ayres) and Carrick Felix.

Sendek has posted a 9-10 record against rival Arizona. His teams won five straight in the series from 2007 to 2009. Against current UA coach Sean Miller, Sendek has posted a 4-8 mark.

Arizona State went 159-137 under Sendek, a mark good enough for a winning percentage of .537.

Sendek led ASU to five 20-win seasons, with the high point being the 25 posted in 2009-09. Prior to Sendek’s arrival, Arizona State had tallied just three 20-win campaigns in the previous 25 seasons.

The Devils have a 3-9 record under Sendek in the Pac-10/12 Tournament. Only Mike Montgomery, who coached at both Stanford and California, has lost more games in the setting.

Over his last five seasons with the team, Sendek lost 11 scholarship players to transfer. Among them were Trent Lockett (Marquette), Evan Gordon (Indiana), Calaen Robinson (Portland State) and Brandan Kearney (Detroit).

Arizona State won 46 home games over the last three seasons, while dropping just eight contests at Wells Fargo Arena during that span.
