Reports: Arizona State’s Herb Sendek, Ray Anderson to meet about future

LISTEN: Ray Anderson- ASU athletic director

The Arizona State Sun Devil basketball season ended Sunday night in overtime as they fell to Richmond 76-70.

According to reports, it’s possible that was Herb Sendek’s last game as the head coach of the Sun Devils.

SunDevilSource.com reports Sendek will meet with Vice President of Athletics Ray Anderson on Tuesday morning.

Herb Sendek and Arizona State Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson are scheduled to meet Tuesday morning at 9:45 to discuss the future of the men’s basketball program at the school, according to multiple sources familiar with the plan.

ESPN’s Andy Katz reports the same meeting but also believes some staff members don’t expect to be retained.

A number of industry sources told ESPN that staff members have already leaked that they expect to be fired. But ESPN was unable to confirm that late Monday and calls and text messages to Sendek weren’t returned.

Should ASU move on from Sendek, Katz mentions Memphis’ Josh Pastner and UC Irvine’s Russell Turner as potential candidates.

Last week Anderson spoke with Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s Bickley and Marotta and said he would evaluate the season as a whole.

“We have heard from a lot of folks who are very disgruntled with where the program is,” he said. “So at the end of the day, you’ve got to evaluate the program and do what’s in the best interest of Sun Devil athletics. And we will do that, but the season’s not over.”

The Sun Devils would go on the road and beat Connecticut in the opening round of the NIT before losing to Richmond.

Anderson explained the process the best he could.

“How we do the process is really something we should maintain in terms of being private,” Anderson said. “But at the end of day, I’ve got to make the decision. That’s why I’m here. That’s why President (Michael) Crow brought me here.

“The athletic director has to be able to make choices that he thinks (are) in the best long-term interests of the institution and our programs, and so that will be me.”

Arizona State finished the season 18-16, 9-9 in conference play. In the Pac-12 tournament they led USC by 14 points before a disastrous final nine minutes saw them fall 67-64.
