Arizona State falls to Oregon, loses third straight: By the Numbers

Jan 11, 2015, 1:07 AM | Updated: 1:08 am

The good news: ASU will get to return home after three straight road games to open Pac-12 play.

The bad news: The Sun Devils lost all three of those games, including Saturday’s contest against Oregon, 59-56.

Shaq McKissic scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds and Eric Jacobsen added 13 points and was 6-of-6 from the field. But turnovers and a failure to capitalize on end-of-game chances saw ASU suffer its third consecutive loss and fall to 8-8 (0-3 Pac-12).

Struggles with turnovers have been Arizona State’s song and dance so far this season, and this game was no different as the Sun Devils gave the ball away 15 times.

With the game tied at 55 and 1:30 left to play, ASU turned the ball over twice in a row. Oregon then hit the go ahead layup on the second giveaway.

McKissic was sent to the line with 11 seconds left and the chance to tie the game, but missed both free throws. He also missed a tying trey with just three seconds left and sealed the game.

What did Arizona State’s road loss look like, by the numbers?

44

Head coach Herb Sendek continues to tinker with his starting lineup, and sent freshman Kodi Justice (No. 44) out to open the game instead of Gerry Blakes. Justice hit a 3-pointer for his only score.

3-17

Arizona State was ice cold from behind the arc, hitting only 3-of-17 3-pointers (18.2 percent).

They shot 40.4 percent from the field, making 19-of-47 attempts.

15

ASU had 15 turnovers on 67 possessions (22.4 percent) and turned the ball over only four fewer times than their made field goals (19). Before Saturday, they had 38 turnovers and 31 field goals.

The turnovers also led to nine Oregon points, but the Ducks did give the ball up 15 times for eight ASU points.

32-26

The Sun Devils outrebounded Oregon 32-26 and gave up just six second-chance points.

8 (part I)

ASU recorded eight steals as opposed to Oregon’s three. However, they could only manage two fast-break points.

8 (part II)

Oregon’s Jordan Bell tied a school record with eight blocks. Arizona State did not record a single block.

14

The Sun Devils have now lost 14 straight away from home. Their last win away from Tempe was on Jan. 29, 2014 against Cal.

ASU will return to Tempe to face Utah (13-2, 3-0 Pac-12) on Jan. 15 at 8 p.m.
