Look beyond the 5-11 record, the messy quarterback situation and the fact that the Cardinals finished in last place in the NFC West.

Disregard Arizona's top-10 draft pick, anemic running game and sieve of an offensive line.

The "Same Old Cardinals" as we knew them are dead, a thing of the past.

Now if only the "Same Old Cardinals Fans" would go with them.

"I think that when you look at the last three seasons, particularly the last two seasons, our defense has performed at a very high level," Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said Monday. "Our offense seemed to struggle. We needed to focus on improving our offense, and I just didn't feel like where things stood that the course that we were on was the way to keep going."

Bidwill continued.

"So I felt like it was time to make a change. When you look at the last three seasons, we didn't have a winning season in any of those three seasons. Of the 48 games, we won 18, and only four of those games were on the road."

Pretty compelling reasons for a change to be made, right? The idea in the NFL is, after all, to win games, and the Whisenhunt-led Cardinals were clearly not doing that.

Even so there were -- and still are -- many who feel like Bidwill made a mistake, that canning the most successful coach in franchise history will set the team back.

You won't be able to do better than Whisenhunt.

Can't do better than a coach with a 45-51 record who has posted just two winning seasons in six tries? I certainly hope the Cardinals can, and at the very least they should try to do better.

I'm OK with the move if they have an actual plan in place.

Teams do not generally fire coaches and soon after come to the realization that they now have to replace him. Bidwill said he had been thinking about making this move for a while, so it stands to reason he not only had a list of candidates he wanted to speak with, but a good idea about whether or not they would be interested in the job.

Whisenhunt was not the problem, this won't help.

This is debatable, as the coach had nothing to do with the injuries that besieged his team but had everything to do with the players on the roster. Was Whisenhunt the coach sabotaged by Whisenhunt the talent evaluator? Perhaps, but at the end of the day they are the same person, and the latter certainly had to go.

By making the move, Bidwill took another step toward proving he is not running a "cheap" organization. Many theorized the Cardinals would keep Whisenhunt around because they did not want to pay both him and a new coach next season, which is something that would have fit right along with how the franchise used to be run.

But that is not the case anymore.

"I think when you look back at the opportunity that we had to get to the Super Bowl, that is something that I want to get back to," Bidwill said. "I want to get back to winning football. It is a lot more fun to be winning football games and have all that excitement around this organization."

That makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

Yet, there is a contingent of folks who still believe either believe the Cardinals can't be successful, don't don't know how to be successful or don't want to be successful.

Those folks can't seem to let go of what the Cardinals once were. Bidwill has for the most part lived up to the promise he made back in the day that a new stadium would lead to a new Arizona Cardinals franchise, and now simply being mediocre or competitive is not enough.

The Cardinals weren't even that of late.

The Cardinals demand better, and they weren't getting it.

And whether they give the job to Andy Reid, Ray Horton, Mike McCoy or any one of the candidates available, all that matters is they decided the status quo, which was a 5-11 season that included a nine-game losing streak, was not acceptable. So they made a change.

It's the type of thing a team that cares about winning first would do.

Ladies and gentlemen, these are your Arizona Cardinals.

    Blame the fans?
Totally shocked Adam. What have the Cards given us beside one lucky Super Bowl season? ZERO. I once purchased 72 Pinto for $2500 put over $5k into it. Guess what I had when I finished? A $2500 Pinto. A zebra doesnt change his stripes and the Bidwells will never win no matter how much we think they are investing. Prove to me on the field they are a wiiner and I will trade my Bronco orange in for Cardinal red.

lets find a new coach not a retread
hey bidwill's please do us a favor. find a fresh new coach not a retread who was just gotten rid of by philli for also having numerous loosing season's. if he was that good, philli whould not have let him go. philli has been very loyal to their coach. so maybe reid, is past his time or just needs a little break. give someone fresh a chance. look whats going on in frisco. give horton a chance to bring in an offensive guru who knows how to use the players and their strengths, and not make them do it his way. just a thought

    Really?
So is this a retread article from when Bidwell fired Green? Or perhaps good ole Buddy? Adam, worst article ever. I understand 'fans' really WANT change, but the fact is, nothing has changed in terms of being a winning org. The reason: THE BIDWELLS DONT CARE ABOUT WINNING. CHECK THEIR RECORD. THEY SUCK! Some have blogged that they turned the corner when Warner was here. And, I, too originally thought that was a possibility. But absolute screw ups with Manning, Fitzgerald, Kolb, Graves, the entire Oline, drafts...the list goes on and on.

...THis has shown me that Bidwell Inc doesnt care. The fans pay the bills Adam. If you put a crappy product on the field, people wont show. I certainly wont. I understand down times. But in Cards lore, its hasnt been about a winning legacy with a few downturns to rebuild. It has been a losing legacy with one, perhaps two, short periods of hope. Seriously, why should I spend money, I worked hard to earn, on this? How does one support this? This isnt about the underdog, this is about philosophy. If I am wrong, how come the Cardinals continue to have little/no respect in the NFL?

    Being a Cardinals Fan
The reality of being a Cardinal fan is that the team has an exciting playoff run every 8-10 years or so. Obviously I hope that changes starting next season now that the team finally has a top tier Defense that can actually win it all with even an average offense. It's may sound absurd but I prefer to be a Cards fan at least over the past 8 years compared to say the Ravens, Niners or Patriots. Think about how frustrating it must be for those franchises to come within inches of winning it all only to come up short. Food for thought.

    Not Michael's Father's Cardinals
What is the saying ? This isn't your Father's XXX (fill in the blank). Michael isn't Bill and this isn't the same ole Cardinals (although the stands felt that way at games over the last few home games). He ponied up the cash for Kolb, no doubt based on Whiz and Graves input, it didn't work out. And he ponied up to resign Dockett, Fitz, Campbell, etc. The man was in Sportsman's park during the Warner playoff run and enjoyed every minute, no doubt he wants that again.

    Kudos to Michael Bidwill
It's clear the cardinals are moving our of the past and into the future over the last few years. Michael seems to care more about winning football games than his father did. Clearly dad was well loved and cared about his relationships and people more than he cared about being competitive. Michael seems to have learned a lot from his father with a stronger commitment to being good. I'll keep my season tickets because it's not the same old cardinals (even though it sure felt like it for the last few weeks!)

    Same old Cardinals fans...
I have been a Cardinals fan since I can remember football. (1972) I grew up in the St. Louis area and suffered through the good and bad times. Yes, there were good times too. I begin every year with high hopes. I watch every game I can and usually watch the whole game regardless of the score. Yes, the last three years were very frustrating. So when another team comes to town, I am still wearing my Cardinals hat, Fitz Jersey, and Property of the Arizona Cardinals tee-shirt. I even go out in public with my Cardinals gear on. Now that's a fan!

    Love it
I couldn't agree more. It's tough to win in the NFL, and I think Kurt Warner bought coach Whiz some extra years with the Cardinals, sooner or later the only thing that matters is winning, and Whiz clearly lost the respect of his players. It's good to see ownership making the changes to get this team on the right track for the future. I'm a Wisconsin native, but make my home in AZ and am a Cardinals fan 1st. Hopefully this decision will be the right one, and the Cardinals will improve next year. GO CARDS!
