Another offseason, and another Kevin Kolb bonus sitting squarely in the middle of the Cardinals' plans.

Last year it was a $7 million roster bonus due to Kolb that essentially forced the Cardinals to excuse themselves from Peyton Manning's table. This year, it's a $2 million roster bonus that Kolb is owed if he's on the roster on March 17th.

While the options aren't nearly as enticing and the money just doesn't pack the same punch, the effect is the same: it's a deadline to decide. With that deadline now less than two weeks away, it's interesting to note that there hasn't been a ton of chatter in the media about any conversations between Kolb and the Cardinals. At least, none that I've heard or read on Twitter from those who are better connected than I on this one.

Does it simply mean they have yet to start talking? Or that they have started and nobody has heard about it? Both possible.

In the leverage game, I believe the Cardinals have the edge. Surely Kolb can point to the dearth of QBs around the league and dare the Cardinals to do better than him. The Cards can point to the other starting jobs available and dare him to do the same. Ultimately, I think the team's stance is stronger.

It's also possible, as Darren Urban suggested a couple of weeks back, that they'll cut Kolb and once he finds out that there isn't anything better out there, he'll be back.

I can't help but to wonder if the silence (perceived or real) is a sign the Cardinals aren't terribly interested in bringing Kolb back. At first glance that seems illogical. After all, they've invested a lot in Kolb. They would look foolish for giving him $20+ Million for a handful of games over two years.

But that should not be Bruce Arians' concern. He is trying to find a QB who can play his style of offense. Perhaps after watching the tape (again, speculating here) Arians has decided that person is not Kevin Kolb. After all, Arians has said in the past he wants big chunks of yards downfield; not really Kolb's game. If Arians has determined that Kolb isn't his type of QB, then perhaps the Cardinals aren't motivated to bring him back.

In which case, you could have a complete do-over at the QB position.

    Time to Cut Losses?
Yes they've poured a lot of money into KK with not much in return so maybe, as Urban speculates, they cut him and bring him back for less. But, who do you replace him with if another team grabs him (however unlikely that may seem)? There's no doubt his contract needs to be re-done (lowered in cost) and maybe that's in the works and if so, I say bring him back. If not, cut him and see where the chips fall.

    Time to move on
I like Kevin Kolb. I think he has the potential to be a productive starter in the NFL. But the guy cannot stay healthy. Period. With a new coach, new GM and a fresh start I think the Cardinals need to draft Geno Smith if he falls to 7 (which is very possible now). Lets start from scratch and let Arians and Tom Moore mold their guy from the get go. Geno is the type of player you can build around in my opinion. 42 TD's 6 INT's his senior year and like a 70% completion percentage with virtually no running game, terrible line and terrible defense.

    He has to be renegotiated
The team simply can't bring back Skelton and Lindley after the abomination that was last year. They also can't reasonably expect to bring in THREE league-caliber quarterbacks in one offseason. Kolb needs to be renegotiated. I expect Smith to be the pick if he is there, but if not, we need SOMEBODY to play the role. Picking up a qb in the 2nd or overdrafting one in the first still won't solve the talent dilemma.

    waiting
Cards are probably waiting on Kolb to accept their low ball offer. Probably has until the end of the week or so.

Drafting Rd 1 QB? Kolb Starter?
Please dont waster another 1st rnd pick on a 2nd tier player. If you have read my posts before, you already know how I feel of Kolb...great BACKUP. But, there is no one is this draft that has shown they are a NFL starter in 2013. Every last one needs a load of seasoning and maybe a couple guys will make it. But, waste another early first round pick on an average player=stupid. That said, If they rework Kolbs deal (backup), great. Pick up a QB in the 4th, and try like hell to convince Buffalo-they dont need Fitzpatrick. He can run an offense, smart, good arm, accurate and stays pretty healthy.

I'm tired of this "lets draft a QB in the 4th round" crap. Yeah it's cute when we are all trying to play GM but the bottom line is that 27 of the 32 starting QBs in the NFL are first round draft picks. Franchise QBs do not fall to the 4th round. Period. Geno Smith is a first round talent and if he is there with the 7th pick the Cardinals need to sprint to the podium. And Fitzpatrick? Come on man..

Renegotiating Kolb's contract, and drafting a QB with the expectation that he'll likely play this year due to an injury to Kolb.
