The 2015 Heisman Trophy won’t be handed out for another seven months, but it’s never too early for some projections.
SI.com’s projections portend good things for the Arizona Wildcats this upcoming season.
Writer Zac Ellis listed his post-spring practice favorites for the award, and while they don’t have anybody in the top ten, the Wildcats have two players in the ‘keep an eye on’ category.
Linebacker Scooby Wright III and quarterback Anu Solomon were both included by Ellis.
Wright, a junior from Windsor, Calif., was a one-man wrecking crew for head coach Rich Rodriguez in 2014, leading the team in tackles (163), tackles for loss (29), sacks (14) and forced fumbles (6).
He won the Pac-12 Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year Award as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Jack Lambert Award. Wright finished ninth in last year’s Heisman Trophy balloting — the only defensive player to finish in the top ten.
Solomon is headed into his redshirt sophomore season in Tucson. He led the Wildcats to their first-ever Pac-12 South title and a berth in the Vizio Fiesta Bowl. Solomon completed 58 percent of his passes for 3,793 yards and 28 touchdowns last season.
SI.com lists TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin as the early favorite, followed by quarterback Cardale Jones and tailback Ezekiel Elliott of Ohio State, Georgia running back Nick Chubb and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
