Three ASU football players were named to preseason watch lists by the Maxwell Football Club, which were announced Tuesday.
ASU redshirt senior quarterback Mike Bercovici and senior wide receiver D.J. Foster were named to the Maxwell preseason watch list.
The Maxwell Award, which began in 1937, is awarded annually to college football’s best player.
ASU redshirt senior cornerback Lloyd Carrington was named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to college football’s best defensive player in every season since 1995.
The Sun Devils were one of 14 FBS schools with multiple representatives on the Maxwell Football Club’s watch lists.
Bercovici is entering his first season as the starting quarterback after starting three games in relief of an injured Taylor Kelly. He threw for 1,445 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, setting an NCAA record with 998 passing yards in his first two career starts.
He also was partially responsible for one of the most iconic plays in school history, the “Jael Mary” pass to Jaelen Strong against USC.
Foster is the only active FBS player with more than 1,500 career rushing and receiving yards. He ran for more than 1,000 yards (1,081) for the first time in his career in 2014 while also serving as ASU’s second-leading receiver.
Carrington is a former Pitt transfer who followed coach Todd Graham when he was hired in 2011. He was named an All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2014, finishing with 58 total tackles (six for loss) with three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.’
No Sun Devil has ever won the Maxwell or Chuck Bednarik Award.
