Every year about 25 FBS teams are looking for a new head coach.
Sometimes those looking for a new coach will pluck an established one from another program. Sometimes they’ll hire a retread who has bounced around the country. And of course, there’s always the hot coordinators who get their chance to sit in the big chair and lead a program.
Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell might be one of the men who falls into the final category in the very near future. Jeremy Fowler of CBSSports.com has Norvell on his list of 10 coordinators who might be head coaches in 2014.
He has already added titles, from offensive coordinator to deputy head coach. Why not add something else in December? Norvell is a highly skilled playcaller.
Norvell, 32, is heading into his fourth season as an offensive coordinator. The first came in 2011 under Todd Graham at Pittsburgh before following the head coach to Tempe. Last season, his Sun Devils ranked 10th in the nation in scoring offense (39.7 points per game) and 32nd in total offense (457.3 yards per game.)
The return of quarterback Taylor Kelly, running back D.J. Foster, wide receiver Jaelen Strong and three-fifths of last year’s offensive line should do nothing to hurt Norvell’s stock as an up-and-comer to watch this season.
