Territorial Cup History: Arizona State vs. Arizona
It's the oldest trophy in college football.
It's been lost and found, and once again represents the prize awarded to the winner of the annual football game between the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.
Saturday night in Tempe, the 13th-ranked Sun Devils will host their bitter rivals to the south in hopes of keeping the Territorial Cup on campus for the second straight season.
But that's not the only thing on the line in this, the 87th gridiron meeting of the two schools. The Wildcats (7-4) are looking to improve their position in the conference bowl pecking order. And with a win, the Sun Devils (9-2) will host the Pac-12 Championship Game December 7 against Stanford with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line.
Arizona leads the all-time series 47-38-1 and in the Pac-10/Pac-12 era, holds a 19-15-1 advantage. But since the turn of the century, ASU has an 8-5 edge, including last year's thrilling 41-34 win in Tucson.
Since 1978, this is only the third time each team has had seven or more wins entering the contest, and the first since 1986 when a 7-2 Arizona team knocked off the 4th-ranked Sun Devils 34-17, ruining their undefeated season and eliminating any hope they had of capturing a national championship.
As we get closer to Saturday's contest, here's a little thumbnail history of what this heated rivalry game has looked like since the two schools joined the Pac-10 in 1978.
