Doug and Wolf talk to Patterson about the latest developments in ASU Athletics.

Attendance at Arizona State University sporting events can be spotty at best.

In good years, the Devils tend to draw fairly well. In the not so good years, not so much.

Athletic director Steve Patterson, a guest of Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf during "Newsmakers Week", said fan support has a direct effect on the team's chance for success.

"I've been very transparent and had some difficult conversations at times," Patterson said. "I think people in the community have the opportunity to be part of the solution or part of the problem.

"And you can wake up every day and look at that in a lot of aspects of your life. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem?"

Football fans may be leaning towards becoming part of the solution, as Patterson said ticket sales are up for the 2013 season. However recent history is littered with instances where fans have not been as generous with their support. Patterson said the university is working hard to change perception of the school and make people feel good about being ASU alums, but added if they want to see top-level success they'll need to step up, too.

"If you really do love ASU and you really do want us to go somewhere," Patterson said, "and you really do want to see great athletic teams and see our athletes graduate, which they do at far greater rates...and you want to see them continue to have success, then you need to opt in to being part of the solution and support the school.

"You know, we're going to have good years and bad years, we're going to have good players and bad players. These are not professional athletes, these are student-athletes that are trying to get their degree and doing the best they can every day to win their events that they're involved in."

    ASU HOOPS
The school MUST change the location of the student section at the games. I watch the games on cable, here, and you can't hear the students because they're stuffed in one corner of the arena, not even close to the court. If you look at ANY of the ACC schools their students are in the prime locations, right down the sidelines of the court. THEY impact the games because they are loud from the first tip. When I watch on TV all I see in the prime seats are adults and older people sitting down for the entire game. CREATE A HOME COURT ATMOSPHERE...........

    student section
EXACTLY! student section at football isnt the best placement, but for basketball it is TERRIBLE. embrace the greek life and make the student section a larger part of the stadium. it would be a much better atmosphere and attendence would go up!

    Patterson dishing on fans
Well, I hate to play the role of an old fart, but back in the 60's the student tickets for football and basketball were free and you got to sit at midfield or center court in the sections closest to the team and action. Some money hungry pukes come along and shove the students into the corners, charge for the tickets, and rob them when they want to buy a coke or snack. You want to get more fans in the stands? I'd like to see the stands packed to capacity and I don't see a reason why they aren't... except for the administration not making the all of us fans feel welcome!

    AD Patterson's comments
They've got the fans that are committed to going over a barrel, just like the students wanting to go to college and their ever increasing tuition. Fans that go should boycott the concession stands for a season... students that are tired of being ripped off on tuition... take a semester off or maybe just drop down to one class for a semester or two. Look at the salaries of the administration clowns... I see a Resident Life RHA(?) with a salary of over $500,000! Are you kidding me???

    Maybe ASU is the problem
...based on this article the problem is easy to solve because there is a direct correlation between the product on the field and the ticket sales. Poor product, poor ticket sales. Maybe the problem is the mindset, decision making, and approach of ASU internally. Because I've never heard an AD committed to success ever say "we're going to have good years & bad years". Blaming the fans seems an easy way out of doing all of the hard work it will take to turn this into a winner...atleast that's the sense I get from this statement.

    put up or shut up
This is about donations and putting your money where your mouth is. ASU is in the bottom of most of the donation categories yet we have one of the largest alumni bases in the country. Folks are not giving to the program. Without money, no facilities, and no facilities means sparse talent, no regular high level of talent, no winning - get the idea. If everyone of the 60,000 students on campus in 1996 gave $50 to athletics we would have $3,000,000 to put towards facilities. That is huge. Time to put up or shut up ASU fans...
