It was nearly one year ago when Arizona State fired Dennis Erickson.

The embattled football coach, whose team had lost four straight Pac-12 games, was allowed to coach in the Las Vegas Bowl in late December, but the search for a replacement began a month prior.

That it didn't lead to then-Houston and current Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was a very costly mistake, according to ESPN NCAA football analyst Mark May.

Sumlin has guided the Aggies to an 8-2 mark in his first year at the helm, a record that includes a win over No. 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The team won just seven games all of last season.

"Arizona State made a big, big-time mistake by not hiring this guy," May told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Tuesday.

May pointed to the record of Sumlin's current team compared to that of his former squad, Houston, which won 13 games last season (12 under Sumlin) but is just 4-6 this year.

"Just by those numbers alone it tells you what type of coach this is," May said. "He can get the job done with your guys, he can get the job done with his guys, he can get the job done, period."

Sumlin was rumored to be interested in the Arizona State job last winter, but many feel he would not have come to Tempe after learning the A&M job was available.

Mark May joins the guys today to talk about all of the upsets in college football this weekend, starting with number one Alabama going down to Texas A & M. How special is Johnny Manziel? Did ASU make a mistake in not pursuing Kevin Sumlin? And, can Notre Dame beat USC?
Still, May says ASU's problem was that they did not aggressively pursue the coach as soon as they could, and instead waited long enough for competition to become an issue.

"You've got to put your hat in the ring," May said. "If you don't put your hat in the ring and you don't do it early enough you don't know if you're going to get the guy or not."

May added it's possible Sumlin would have visited Tempe and been so impressed that he decided to take the job.

Instead, Sumlin accepted the Texas A&M job on December 10, while the Sun Devils landed Todd Graham four days later.

    Mark May is a dope
Sumlin turned down ASU, you can't force someone to take a job they don't want. It's been a while but I seem to recall that he had some historical connection with Texas A&M. Mark May continues to be classless

Sumlin does have history with A&M - he was an assistant under R.C. Slocum about 10 years ago - so it kind of makes sense that A&M would have more appeal to him than ASU. And once again Mark May shows his enduring bias against ASU... I'm not sure what his issue is with that program or if he just likes busting on Gambo (I didn't hear the segment today with MM).

    Clarification of his comments
Apparently you guys missed the part where he says they may have gotten him if they had been aggressive. For full disclosure, May is really good friends with Greg Byrne, but doesn't mean he is biased. You guys weren't happy when he said you were overrated at 5-1, but are you rethinking that? And who knows, maybe Sumlin falls in love, especially with his offense out west? What are your thoughts on Graham now? Do you think he is still the guy or a mistake? I think he was still a great choice for you, but everyone got a little ahead of themselves.

He should be talking about why Graham left his Pitt team that chocked worse than any game this year against Notre Dame.

I dont think Sumlin would have ever come to ASU - just wasnt realistic. I do not fault may for saying the Sun Devils were overrated, as I tend to agree. A .500 team is just about where they are right now, win the ones they are supposed to, lose the rest. But I do think Graham has potential, and given a couple years (if he stays that long..) could field a top team in the pac 12.

    Captain Hindsight Strikes Again!
Lets not forget that Dennis Ericson had a great 1st year when he took the coaching job at ASU. Sumlin is doing great but I think we need a few years on the job to see if winning is something he can do consistently. ASU is a project, Graham is where he's supposed to be with this squad. Lets give him some time and see how this all works out before we start calling people mistakes.

    Issues...
You have issues Mesa Mad Man, you are reasonable and realistic. :) I took a lot of crap from ASU fans with Arizona's start, not hearing from them much. ASU is so similar to where Arizona was a couple years back with the backloaded schedule. Before the season I thought 6 wins would be about right for Arizona, so we're playing with house money. If we get 7, and maybe 8 wins, that is just unbelievable. But I think ASU wins next week, just have a bad feeling...
