The roller coaster ride of expectations during a football season is an interesting one.

There likely hasn't been a team that's had as many drastic peaks and valleys as the 2012 Arizona State Sun Devils. With a new coaching staff in place, the Devils were picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 South by the media covering the conference.

But ASU came out playing a disciplined style that fans weren't used to seeing during Dennis Erickson's coaching tenure. Not only were the Sun Devils playing smart football, they were winning games. Todd Graham's team won five of its first six games, changing the expectation level of fans and setting up a huge nationally-televised Thursday night affair with highly-ranked Oregon.

A chance to pull an upset and impress observers nationwide fell by the wayside as the Ducks pounded ASU 43-21. That was followed up by a tough last-second 45-43 loss to UCLA.

Suddenly, ASU found themselves with a 5-3 record and a disgruntled fan base has taken notice, responding negatively, jumping off the bandwagon and even labeling this year's team as "the same ol' Sun Devils."

ASU senior linebacker Brandon Magee has noticed, and he's not all that happy about it.

"Some of our fans don't even believe in us as a team anymore and they think that we're going to fall into the same season as last year -- I find that kind of ridiculous," Magee said following Tuesday's practice.

Last season, the Sun Devils stormed out to a 6-2 start and held control of their own destiny in the Pac-12 South race, but consecutive losses to UCLA, Washington State, Arizona and California derailed a once-promising campaign and ended Erickson's coaching tenure.

"That's how I really feel, it's ridiculous," Magee added. "I go on Facebook and I see bad messages, I go on Twitter, I see bad stuff, I watch the news, I see bad stuff. It's like 'gosh dang!' Where's the support at? Y'all was with us when we were winning and we start losing and y'all just go away.

"But it's cool, I understand that fact and so do my other teammates and we've just got stay as brothers and listen to our coaches and we'll be just fine."

Magee, who's in his fifth year in the program, uses the negativity as fuel, but doesn't like it when it's directed toward younger players who aren't used to outside scrutiny.

"I enjoy reading that stuff, it makes me laugh. What else are y'all doing all day? Nothing? People that tweet that much, like what are you doing? Do you go outside?" Magee asked. "And it's always negative. Negative, negative, negative. It's been like that for five years, ever since I've been here. Once we start losing, people want to start losing faith and nobody wants to say nothing? I'll say something."

Despite the fans' negativity, Magee believes the Sun Devils are in the right frame of mind to get back on the winning track against 11th-ranked Oregon State Saturday night.

"We're really motivated, and we know we've got to close out these last four games at an all-time high," he said. "We know we've got to pull together even closer than we've ever been, especially going on the road to Oregon State."

    ASU Defined.
You think there's no link between coaches leaving the school after very short tenures or major recruiting violations? athletic directors firing? the entire baskebtall team transferring away? botching a coaching search due to a lack of interested candidates? national media outlets and local sportscasters constantly calling out the fans for their lack of loyalty? Now the players are turning on them mid-season...pattern? Naaa. But there's always plenty of parties to attend.

    Fans!
Well Magee, we as fans have been dealing with your MEDIOCRE play for those 5 years as well, so I guess that makes us Brother's! If you want fans then start winning with your NEW disciplined team and you will get them and KEEP them! Or you can be like the Cubs(lovable loosers) and have fans out of simpathy! Which would you prefer? I as a Devil's fan and LOYAL season ticket holder for 16 yrs am tired of the fact that this team has NOT lived up to it's exspectations AT ALL!!! Not all of this falls on the player's, you can put the BLAME on the University and the coaches as well!!

    Temper Expectations
ASU fans, if they were being realistic, should blame themselves. Yeah, you busted out of the gate fast, but no one wanted to believe ASU was playing weak talent. Well, here you are with two losses in a row and a likely third. And I think you may get USC after that, probably another loss. But in the end, I thought both Arizona teams would win six games and call that a success. Arizona now has a better chance to win more than six, but we're still going to have to deal with each other in a few weeks and there will probably be something big on the line for one of the teams.

That's what you get for going to AsSU

Better town than Northern Mexico University!!!
Atleast he had a hope of going to the Rose Bowl at ASU!! How many have the Wildcats been to budy? How about 0! That's right your Arizona Wildcats will FOREVER go down in PAC-10 conference history as the ONLY team to NOT make it to the ROSE Bowl!!! The closest you will EVER get to the Rose Bowl would be if you went to the flower shop!!

Sorry forkem', we'll be playing at the Rose Bowl this weekend. Keep that as your mantra that the 'Cats haven't gone to a Rose Bowl. It's a great thing and I hope we do it someday, but the landscape has changed. You keep trying to get to the Rose Bowl and we'll try to get to the National Championship. Afterall, we've actually won a majoy NC. How about ASU?

Dichotomy Between Two University Fan Bases
It's amazing to watch the dichotomy between the fan bases at ASU & UA. This may be a skewed sample, but I've been reading articles and blogs about both teams for years. The fan comments are always so negative at ASU and derail to start attacking other teams, grammatical errors aside. The fan comments at UA seem to be much more rational and encouraging. This post doesnt seem to be any exception. Anyone ever notice you see 10x the UA license plates while driving around Phoenix? Coincidence?

    Big weekend
I'm a lifelong die hard Sun Devils fan. We need to put the last 2 games behind us. If the Devils can get a win against what I think is an over rated Oregon State team, which, thank god does not run a lighting fast offense like Oregon and Ucla. The Devils will be very much in the Pac 12 South Race. I think Oregon will take care of Usc and Arizona will beat Ucla. The last game of the season down in Tucson could be for the south. How fun would that be considering that game has never benn meaningful on a national stage. Lets wait and see how this thing plays out.

I actually see more ASU license plates then uofa. Outside of uofa basketball, both fan bases are fickel. Yes, there is more to do in tempe then tucson, but most fans are sick and tired of mediocrity and failure. they lost that game last week and fans are sick and tired of showing up to watch failure. I dont blame them. However, I still believe the fan base needs to give asu a home field advantage and pack the stadium like in the 70's-90's. If you want it to change, fans have a part in showing support. I like Grahams potential to build a better team then Rich rod.
