Arizona Coyotes fall to Kings despite Mike Smith’s outstanding night: By the Numbers

A 34-save performance on 35 shots faced is typically good enough to earn a win in the National Hockey League.

But not these Arizona Coyotes. Not this season.

Despite a dominant performance in net from Mike Smith, the Coyotes lost for the 15th time in 16 games, falling 1-0 at the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

Smith’s only blemish was a first-career NHL goal from Andy Andreoff with 1:05 to play in the second period.

It was enough to aid the Kings (34-22-13; 81 points) in the Western Conference playoff race and keep the Coyotes (21-41-8; 50 points) in a tie with the Edmonton Oilers for last place in the conference. The Oilers were a 4-1 winner Monday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jonathan Quick stopped 25 shots to earn his sixth shutout of the season for Los Angeles.

For the second straight time, Smith didn’t receive any offensive support against the Kings. The Coyotes were blanked 4-0 at home by LA with Smith in net Dec. 4.

The Coyotes have dropped three straight games to the Kings after earning a 3-2 overtime win in their second game of the season Oct. 11. Los Angeles has outscored the ‘Yotes 9-2 in those games.

With Monday’s performance, Smith has allowed two or fewer goals in four of his last five games. The only problem: The Coyotes have scored four combined goals in those games.

Arizona has scored a total of seven goals in as many games in March. Three of those goals came in the Coyotes’ shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks on March 5. They’ve scored one or no goals in the other six games — all losses.

The Coyotes were shut out for the ninth time this season and for the second time in their last five games. They fell 2-0 at home to the Montreal Canadiens on March 7.
