San Jose Sharks hand Arizona Coyotes sixth straight home loss: By the Numbers

The Arizona Coyotes have played better of late, but their home arena still isn’t treating them well.

The team was looking good after scoring the only two goals of the first period Friday against San Jose, but the visiting Sharks tied it up in the second frame, setting up a showdown in the final 20 minutes.

Arizona’s offense went cold in the third frame, while San Jose kept its second-period momentum going, taking the lead just over six minutes after the intermission, and then getting an empty-netter about 12 minutes later.

The result was a 4-2 Sharks win, snapping a three-game losing skid for the Coyotes’ division rival.

The loss was Arizona’s sixth in a row at home and second overall, and the team dropped to 20-29-7 on the season, second-to-last in the Western Conference. San Jose boosted its record to 29-20-8, holding the second-best mark in the Pacific division.

The Coyotes picked up Mark Arcobello off waivers Wednesday, and the third-year center scored his first goal for the club just one minute and 42 seconds into his debut. It was the ninth goal of the season for Arcobello, who is on his fourth team in 2014-15.

The 26-year-old Connecticut native is one of only a handful of players ever to skate for so many teams in one season.

San Jose was credited with three goals against Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, who hadn’t allowed that many in each of his previous five starts. Smith made 22 saves in the game, but his record fell to 10-24-5 with the loss.

Sharks center picked Joe Pavelski recorded a hat trick as the visiting team scored four unanswered goals to finish the game. It was the fourth career trifecta for Pavelski, who now has an impressive 31 goals on the season.

The Coyotes let San Jose go 1-for-3 on power plays Friday, just the team’s fifth power-play goal allowed in the last 47 opportunities — dating back to Jan. 15. That’s still good for a penalty-kill percentage of 89.4 over the past 14 games. Arizona itself went 1-for-2 with a man advantage against San Jose, and is 9-for-31 (a 29.0 percent conversion rate) since Jan. 15.

Michael Stone recorded an assist on Arcobello’s goal, and Sam Gagner and Keith Yandle were credited with assisting Martin Erat’s eighth goal of the year — during a power play at 15:07 mark of the first period. Coyotes defensemen have either scored or assisted the last nine goals for the team.

Speaking of Yandle, the defenseman picked up his 14th point — all assists — in his last 14 appearances. This recent stretch includes a seven-game point streak for the 28-year-old Boston native, which ended Tuesday in St. Louis. Yandle leads all NHL defenseman with 36 assists on the season.

Despite losing by two, the Coyotes dominated in shots on goal by a 36-26 margin. They also handily won in faceoffs (39-33) and hits (31-23).

Sharks coach Todd McLellan picked up the 300th win of his career. The 47-year-old is the second-fastest coach to reach the mark in NHL history.

Jan. 8

Although the Coyotes are 4-4-1 over their past nine outings, they haven’t won in Gila River Arena since Jan. 8 against Winnipeg. Since that time, they have been outscored 21-8 at home. The team has a chance to stop the home skid on Saturday night — Valentine’s Day — against the New York Rangers (32-16-5).
