The Shootout: Devan Dubnyk trade the first of many for Arizona Coyotes?

Jan 15, 2015, 11:57 PM | Updated: 11:57 pm

The Arizona Coyotes made a seemingly odd move this week when they sent goaltender Devan Dubnyk to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a third-round pick.

Why would you trade the more affordable — and better-performing — Dubnyk while starter Mike Smith is struggling? It’s easy: The Coyotes are looking to get younger. The deal will give them a chance to test some prospects and getting a pick for a player unlikely to re-sign next season is smart business.

The third-rounder could sweeten another trade, though you shouldn’t expect a lot of those. Carter Nacke and Paige Dimakos think a couple of players could leave the team, but the Coyotes are unlikely to enter into true fire sale mode.

What do you think of the trade? Should the Coyotes start dealing players? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.
