Phoenix Coyotes’ slide continues in Winnipeg: By the numbers

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the first goal of the game just over 12 minutes into Monday’s contest, but the Phoenix Coyotes peaked there as they gave up five unanswered goals and lost 5-1 to the Winnipeg Jets at the MTS Centre.
Phoenix has had only three wins interspersed in its last 14 games, losing major ground in the Western Conference playoff race.
Winnipeg entered the game in last place in the Central Division, but improved to 20-23-5 with the win.

The four-point differential was one of the worst of the season for the Coyotes, second only to their 6-1 loss on Oct. 8 to the New York Islanders — Phoenix’s third game of the campaign.

Monday’s contest was penalty laden. Left wing Paul Bissonette spent seven minutes in the box in the second period for two different infractions, including fighting with Jets wing Anthony Peluso. Defenseman Derek Morris was charged with seven minutes all at once for roughing left wing Andrew Ladd and then fighting with him. Rob Klinkhammer served two of the seven minutes charged to Morris.
In the Coyotes’ last 14 games, in which they have lost 11, they finished two or more goals behind their opponent in seven on those contests, including the last five losses.

Captain Shane Doan was credited with an assist on Ekman-Larsson’s first period goal, and his helpers on the year (13) now equal his number of goals.

The Coyotes managed just 19 shots on goal Monday — their most prolific period being the first, when they took seven. Ekman-Larsson took the most shots (4), and had the team’s only goal to show for it.

Ekman-Larsson netted his fourth goal of the year to go with his 19 assists, giving him 23 points on the season — second highest on the team for defensemen, and seventh overall.

The Jets nearly doubled up the Coyotes in shots on goal — 37 to 19. Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith saved just 33 of the 38 shots that came his way for a percentage of 86.8.
