Off the Ice: Time to pump the brakes, Coyotes fans

Holy rumor mill, Batman.

It started late last week with reports of the Greg Jamison group being approved by the NHL as the buyer of the Phoenix Coyotes. There was still a long way to go in the deal, but there was a large amount of progress that fans had been waiting for.

Naturally, the NHL came out and denied the reports, while more and more people began to run with the story. The NHL denied all of those reports and even went to the extent to assuage concerns in Seattle that the team had not been sold, but they were hopeful that Jamison would purchase the team.

Doesn't this sound way too familiar?

We had nearly the same scenario last season with Matthew Hulsizer. The NHL liked him, the fans liked him, the deal was almost done and then KABLOOEY, the whole agreement was blown up by the Goldwater Institute after a lawsuit was threatened.

Reports said that Jamison was offered some sort of rebate and fund that will help cover the team's losses, something the Goldwater Institute is already taking interest in.

It's not the exact same situation, but it's eerily similar. I'm just as excited as the next guy about this possible sale -- and would be more than happy to never write about it again -- but some caution is needed here.

I've spoken with a few people in the know -- no names here, sorry -- and have been told several different things, but they all have the same tone: nothing is imminent.

As fans and a city, we have been put through hell with the rumored deals and sales of the Coyotes. It makes sense that every rumor has us clinging to hope, because there's not much left to cling to. After years of relocation rumors and nervous season ticket renewals, I know my nerves are fried.

Pump those brakes, fans, and let's see what comes out in the wash. The deal looks to be progressing, but we've all seen what happens when too many cooks are in the kitchen when it comes to selling this team.

So when you hear these rumors and "reports," realize that maybe one of the 30 you hear may have a snippet of truth in them. I'm all for this sale being done and being excited about it, but I'm not ready to watch another prospective buyer walk out the door, leaving me in the stands at the last game of the year wondering if this was the last time I'll see NHL hockey played in Arizona.

This must be gut wrenching for the 500 die hard fans.... It sucks.. I am not a Yotes fan by any means, but I am a lifelong hockey fan.. My comment isn't bashing the fans, but the organization. They have been here over a decade and still cannot supplant a decent following. They are near extinct and still do nothing to grow in the community. When I was young I would drive 50 miles to see the Islanders play. I would drive the 40 to see the Yotes, if they gave me a decent product or a reason. (No, continual 8 seeds and 1st round exits are not a good product) Jarrod

Get your facts straight. The Coyotes haven't been 8 seeds the last two years. There's more than 500 die hard fans and you know it. You're trying to compare the Islanders and Coyotes. Have you paid attention to the Islanders the last 15 years? Their organization stinks just as bad as any. Let's see what the Coyotes can do with good ownership committed to growing a fan base and maybe adding a few people in the marketing dept. It's hard to do anything when you're under league control.

Jarrod, not the Coyotes that is. Please leave our state and go back to your beloved New York. Jarrod and people like him are the reason that the Coyotes struggle to get fans. An admitted hockey fan but someone who cares nothing for the hockey team in the market he lives in. The irony is that he is a fan of the Islanders, the worst team in the NHL for fan support. The islanders average only about 1,000 more per game than the Coyotes, who have been ownerless for three seasons. Will you still be an Islanders fan when Charles Wong moves them in 2015?

Take yo simple behind out of here Jarrod! The problem was building the Arena way out West away from the fans! There are fans across the city but 65-70% of the fans are in the East Valley / Scottsdale area. Numbers don't lie but no excuses it is what it is!

Your best rebuttal is "go back to NY". Of course they are my beloved Islanders. I lived and died with them for my entire childhood. ANd yes, they suck..pretty badly actually.. ANd you are right- they were a 6 seed and a 4 seed and both times lost to detroit--even worse. Also, I go to about 20 D Backs games a year, support ASU and even go to some Cards games. So dont just fall back on calling me the problem. The issue is the team sucks. they are boring, the arena is in East LA and they have zero high profile players. The Yotes have had 10 years to "add people in marketing" and grow..

I would love to root for the local hockey team. I cant. I do support them though by going to games when the NY teams are in or when the Habs come to town. I also watch them on tv..And if the Isles move in 2015, NO. they will no longer be my team. Just as the Ravens are not the Browns.. ANd my simple a**.. come on man..nothing simple about me- truth hurts-- the team is a joke and the fan base sucks (numbers wise) time to cut the cord...

I would love it if the team could stay here- honestly. I would love to see a full barn, fans everywhere, and a city behind their hockey team. Phoenix is a horrible sports city and the Yotes, unfortunately are bearing the brunt of it. No one wants to spend $30 a ticket to drive 40 miles in traffic to see a boring team play a 3-2 SO win. It sucks all around. I wish an owner would come in, drop $200 mil, tell Goldwater to shove it, and put a good product on the ice.. I do wish that would happen..but...

Jarrod as much as you hate to admit it, you are the reason why, by your own admission, Phoenix is a "horrible sports city." You only go when the team is winning or when a team from a place where you decided to leave is in town. The Coyotes, having never made it out of the first round and having missed the playoffs 8 straight seasons, haven't done enough to win transplants like you over. That's the reason that we have a bad reputation as far as a sports town. And because the team has not had enough success for you they should leave?

As for the Islanders, FYI when their lease is up in 2015 both Seattle and Quebec City should have new arenas either compelte, or close to it. Enjoy!
