OMAHA, Neb. — After taking home Most Outstanding Player honors during last year’s College World Series in Omaha, Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson will earn no such recognition this season, as his Commodores fell in Wednesday’s decisive game of the 2015 College World Series 4-2 to Virginia.

Going 0-for-4 with an RBI groundout in Game 3 versus the Cavaliers, Swanson will almost assuredly conclude his collegiate career with a bitter taste in his mouth. Wednesday’s hitless effort was a microcosm of Swanson’s experience in the CWS as a whole, as the junior from Marietta, Georgia struggled throughout the tournament, finishing a combined 4-for-24 with one double and two RBI.

Swanson was one of four finalists for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award which is presented to the nation’s top college baseball player, ultimately losing out to Arkansas outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

The D-backs hope to officially sign Swanson sometime within the next few weeks.
