The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected the contract of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
The move was made after the team’s starting catcher, Tuffy Gosewisch, was placed on the 15-day DL with a left knee ACL injury.
Gosewisch hurt himself in the sixth inning of Arizona’s 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday night while trying to run out a ground ball. He is hitting .211 with one home run and 13 RBI on the season.
Saltalamacchia has been in the D-backs organization since signing with the team as a Minor League free agent on May 8. He began the season with the Miami Marlins, but was released after collecting just two hits in 29 at-bats to start the year.
In nine games for Triple-A Reno, the 30-year-old batted .188 with two home runs and seven RBI. He is a career .240 hitter with 90 home runs and 320 RBI over nine Major League seasons.
Along with placing Gosewisch on the DL and adding Saltalamacchia to the big league roster, the D-backs also transferred catcher Oscar Hernandez to the 60-day DL.
