Diamondbacks upend Rockies in series opener: By The Numbers

Aug 30, 2014, 5:06 AM | Updated: 6:53 am

Like most teams in 2014, the Arizona Diamondbacks sure do like playing the Colorado Rockies.

The D-backs are just 56-78 on the season, but they’re 8-5 against their National League West division rivals. And after their 5-2 home win Friday night, they’re 7-1 against the Rockies in their last eight meetings.

The Rockies are the only NL team with a worse record than Arizona, but they actually have a winning home record (34-33). But with an awful 19-48 record away from Coors Field, the D-backs may be able to earn another couple victories this weekend as their three-game series continues in Phoenix.

Here’s a closer look at the D-backs’ Friday night win by the numbers:

0

D-backs pitchers didn’t issue a single walk to the Rockies on Friday.

3

The Diamondbacks mustered just three hits but managed to score five runs, thanks to third baseman Jake Lamb’s eighth-inning grand slam.

6

D-backs starting pitcher Josh Collmenter has allowed one or fewer runs in six of his last 12 starts. Collmenter allowed one run on two hits in 6.1 innings of work on Friday to lower his season ERA to 3.94.

6.06

D-backs reliever Brad Ziegler boasted a 2.42 ERA before the All-Star Break, but his ERA since then has been 6.06. Ziegler gave up one run on three hits in an inning of work Friday.

8

Outfielder David Peralta hit his eighth triple of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning. He scored the D-backs’ first run of the game later in the inning via a wild pitch.

55

It took Lamb just 55 Major League at-bats to hit his first career grand slam. His blast to center field was just his second-ever MLB homer.
