Brewers emerge late, rout Diamondbacks: By The Numbers

Both the Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks had little trouble getting on base Monday at Chase Field, but the two clubs were gridlocked at 3-3 for a good portion of their series opener.
And then the eighth inning happened.
Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy took his turn in the batting order in the seventh, but he was relieved by Joe Thatcher in the top of the following frame. Thatcher struck out one and recorded two outs, but Will Harris came in and allowed two hits and two walks, giving up three earned runs before recording the final out.
The Brewers piled three more runs on the reliever J.J. Putz and the D-backs in the final inning, and they won by a margin of 9-3, with Harris recording the loss.
Arizona remained in the National League West cellar at 30-43, while Milwaukee stayed atop the NL Central, improving to 42-29.

Recently-called up left fielder Roger Kieschnick not only recorded his first hit of the season for the D-backs, but he singled again in the bottom of the seventh. Kieschnick, who played 38 games last year for the San Francisco Giants, went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored on Monday, and his average improved to .188. Three other D-backs players collected two hits in the contest: Paul Goldschmidt, David Peralta and Chris Owings.

Peralta recorded two hits for the seventh time in his first 15 games with the Diamondbacks, tying Matt Kata in 2003 for the club record for such a start. Peralta added one run scored Monday and is now batting .328.

Manager Kirk Gibson was tossed in the top of the ninth inning after an official review didn’t go the Diamondbacks’ way. Gibson has been ejected from a game eight times in his career now.

With the three runs given up in the eighth, Harris’ ERA climbed to 9.24 on the season. But he wasn’t the only D-backs pitcher to sport a lackluster ERA in the game: McCarthy is at 5.18 after 7.0 innings pitched and three earned runs allowed Monday, and Putz finished at 7.11 after he gave up three runs in the ninth.

Goldschmidt singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He added another single later, going 2-for-4 in the game with one strikeout. He is batting .312 on the season.

Although the Diamondbacks collected an impressive 11 hits, not a single one went for extra bases and the team did not record one BB, although Gerardo Parra was hit by a pitch in the seventh frame. Three D-backs batters grounded into double plays on Monday: Parra, Aaron Hill and Prado. Conversely, Arizona pitchers allowed 12 hits to the Brewers on Monday: Two going for doubles, two triples and one homer.

Although McCarthy surrendered three runs in the first three innings, he settled down and retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. He also walked just one Brewer and struck out two in the contest. The 30-year starter helped his chances for a win by singling in two runners in the second inning — his fourth hit of the year — giving the D-backs a 3-2 lead at that point.

Arizona continued to struggle at home, as they’ve now mustered only 12 wins in 37 opportunities. Their 25 home losses are the most in the Majors.

In coming up six runs short, the 9-3 loss was the Diamondbacks worst since being shut out 7-0 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 16 — 29 games ago. Additionally, the D-backs have now lost six of their last eight contests.
