The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Tuesday they have agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Gerardo Parra.

The move means the sides avoided arbitration.

Parra, who spent most of last season as the team's fourth outfielder, figures to contend for a starting spot this season following the trade of Justin Upton to the Atlanta Braves.

Parra, 25, batted .273 with 7 home runs and 36 RBI in 133 games last season. In 2010 he hit .292 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI, but made his mark on defense by winning a Gold Glove for his play in left field.

    everyday outfielder !!!!!
why don't you dbacks quit screwing with this guy by bringing in other guys last year, keeping young in the outfield when he sucked and making him the 4th outfielder....he's a fan favorite, has an edge to him that you want, and could be a gold glover every year if he was an every day player....his numbers would go up too !!!

    I like
this signing but am hoping eventually we extend him to 3-4 years. He has a decent bat but could be much better with more AB's, he plays hard game in & game out, & he is one of the best defenders in the game. I think having him play on a regular basis will be good for this team.
