After rumors circulated that the Arizona Diamondbacks had offered their backup catcher position to free agent Rod Barajas, Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona tweeted that the team has instead re-signed Wil Nieves to a one-year contract worth $800,000.

Nieves signed as a free agent with the Diamondbacks in August of 2012 after catcher Henry Blanco suffered a season-ending injury. In 16 games with the D-backs, Nieves hit .306 (11-for-38) with one home run and three RBI.

Nieves is a nine-year big league vet who has spent time with the Padres, Yankees, Nationals, Brewers and Rockies.

    Blanco
Think they will be sorry they did not resign Blanco. I look for Montero to have a down year as it sure looked like Blanco was the reason Miggy got better every year. Henry was his teacher.

    I agree
with the whole teacher things but I also think that Miggy has signed his big-boy contract and is ready to produce well both defensively and offensively. One of our best players last year really. A team leader. Nieves is insurance. Blanco smashed his hand late last season and is very old. Nieves is like 9 years younger and can spot play every 4th or 5tth game. Plus he's bats right so that plays a good opposite to Miggy (bats left). Also Blanco was set to make like 1.5 mil this year. Nieves costs less. This makes a ton of sense to me.
