While a lot can change next week at the MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville, as it stands now the Arizona Diamondbacks are probably slated to start two right-handed bats at first (Paul Goldschmidt) and third base (Chris Johnson) going into Spring Training.

Seeking a left-handed bat to platoon with either Goldschmidt or Johnson, it apparently hasn't taken long for general manager Kevin Towers to reach out to an available veteran.

Huff, a 12-year veteran, is very familiar with the NL West, having played the past three-plus seasons with the San Francisco Giants. Although the former fifth-round selection has won two World Series rings with the Giants (2010 and 2012), Huff's numbers have dramatically decreased over the past few seasons.

In 2011, he finished last among NL first baseman in OPS (.676), and saw his batting average (.246), home runs (12), RBI (57) and walks (47) all take significant dives from the 2010 season.

Last year in San Francisco, Huff began the season as Bruce Bochy's opening day left fielder, but injuries and a lack of production (.192 batting average, one home run and seven RBI), reduced him to a minor role during the Giants' championship run.

As a Giant, Huff has made a living against the Arizona pitching, hitting .321 with seven home runs and 22 RBI.

    What is with the amount of players the dbacks are looking into that arent terrible...but their prime passed them a few years ago. Almost as if they are looking for guys who have something to prove and what them to do it on our team rather than elsewhere. Make waves, sign someone huge out of nowhere.

    This has always been his strategy from day one. He likes young and veteran talent that is inexpensive. This is a big factor into the handling of Justin Upton. Towers thinks he can get a lot in return for him and just keep a low payroll (sound like anyone familiar in the Bay Area?) so that costs are low and potential profits are higher. It's a cheap way of running baseball and if you're a small market than this is what your team has to resort to.

    Why has there been zero talk about moving JUP to SS and make GP the starting Right fielder? JUP used to play SS in High School and in College... maybe a new (familiar) position would do him good!?! Parra is a stud and deserves to be in the lineup everyday. Kill two birds with one stone, and save some money without signing a declining veteran! May be crazy, but just a thought. Upton at Shortstop provides the starting Shortstop they are looking for, and moves GP to right field where he thrives... Pennington can play spot starts at all infield positions, as can Bloomquist and Johnny Mac.

    Moving Upton to SS sounds perfect for the team ( is he possibly capable to handle it being in the OF for a number of years --- worth a shot however ) --- I like it; Great idea
