The Arizona Diamondbacks swung a deal Tuesday, acquiring left-handed reliever Matt Reynolds from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for third baseman Ryan Wheeler.

The 28-year-old Reynolds pitched in 71 games for the Rockies in 2012, posting a 3-1 record and 4.40 ERA in 57.1 innings. He struck out 51 and walked 17. Reynolds has appeared in 144 games over the last two years, the third-most in baseball among lefties.

"We are excited to add a versatile and experienced left-handed reliever to the bullpen," Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said in a statement. "He's very familiar with our division and has been a workhorse for the last couple seasons, so we expect he can continue to do that for us."

Wheeler, 24, broke into the big leagues in 2012, appearing in 50 games for the Diamondbacks, hitting .239 with one home run and driving in 10 runs. Wheeler excelled at Triple-A Reno before his call-up, hitting .351 with 15 homers and 90 RBI.

    I was excited about bringing in Kevin Towers, but oh my go(d)..... how many relive pitchers do we need every year?

    why would we want to keep a hitting prospect at a position of need? we to spend some more money on pitching in case the other guys making multimillions dont pan out.

    but, his play initially was luke warm..but someday he'll play like Votto. He even sort of looks like Votto..sorry to see him go.

    If we can cut our 25 man roster to nothing but pitchers, who cares about fielders! We'll pitch so well there'll never be a use for a guy on the hot corner. Guess we'd have to bring back Micah for some power but hey, KT knows what he's doing. Kendrick promote him to defensive/offensive bullpen coordinator asap.

    This move confuses me, I know Towers is known for finding gems in the rough in the bull pen but to give up a decent prospect at a position that already lacked depth to begin with in order to pick up a sub par lefty for the pen? If we wanted lefties why did we trade breslow (who by the way finished the year with the exact solid era he had when we traded him, 2.70). Maybe Reynolds will be a late bloomer and suddenly be effective, maybe wheeler will never be anything, and if so maybe I'll sing Towers praises, but right now this move makes no sense to me.

    that they club gave up on Wheeler so soon. 3b is a need and Reynolds seems like nothing more than bullpen depth. Towers' evaluation of pitching talent is second to none,but sometimes I question his talent evaluation at the other 8 positions.

    I agree, this trade does not make sense. There is something in the works here. One reliever is being moved in a trade. The question is who? I like the idea of Nakajima at SS (appears to be an all around solid player), so Johnson+ platooning 3rd? Maybe. I will get to this. I honestly would like to see a true number 1 power pitcher if Upton is included. So let the speculation begin, how bout Upton, Corbin and Reynolds for David Price? Then Bauer, to Detroit for Castellanos? Who knows what'll happen, but the Reynolds trade is interesting.
