Report: Suns hire assistant coach Mike Longabardi

Jun 23, 2013, 7:12 PM | Updated: 7:12 pm

The Phoenix Suns have reportedly hired another assistant coach this weekend — an addition that has general manager Ryan McDonough’s fingerprints written all over it.

According to Baxter Holmes of Boston.com, veteran Boston Celtics “defensive coordinator” Mike Longabardi has accepted an offer to join Jeff Hornacek’s staff in Phoenix.

Longabardi, who is the first assistant coach to leave Doc Rivers’ staff this offseason, joined the Celtics organization before the 2007-2008 season.

During Longabardi’s six seasons in Boston, the Celtics were a top-5 defensive team every year except 2012-13.

With the latest reported hiring, Hornacek’s staff now features four assistant coaches (Mark West, Jerry Sichting, Kenny Gattison and Longabardi).
