listen Listen: Jason Rowley, Suns president
Rowley explains to Doug & Wolf why he believes Robert Sarver is a good owner.

Phoenix Suns president Jason Rowley wants to clear up some misconceptions.

With the Suns destined to miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season, fans and media alike have expressed frustration over the team's direction, with much of the blame being placed at the feet of owner Robert Sarver

But, as he told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Tuesday, he believes people are misguided when it comes to his boss.

"One of the things I tell people all the time who have never been exposed to Robert and have never dealt with him directly is that he is not what people think that he is or have the impression that he is," Rowley said. "My view of him -- and I have a lot of loyalty to him because he's given me the opportunity to do what I'm doing -- is that he is a very deliberative, very intelligent, very hard-working individual.

"He carries a lot of burdens on a lot of different businesses and he gives them all his all."

Rowley said Sarver doesn't take any days off and is "always churn and burn". But, he noted, it's true that Sarver is demanding when it comes to his employees.

"He drives his people hard; he definitely expects a lot of people," he said. "But more than anything, he gives people the opportunity to make decisions. He listens to his people. He definitely is not someone who is afraid to tell what his opinion is, but in my estimation he is a very good owner."

Yet, much of the general public doesn't believe that. Rowley said the way to change perception is by having Sarver interact with fans, but that at the same time some people just won't change their opinions about the guy.

"To some degree you're not going to be able to change everyone's mind," Rowley said. "They have preconceived notions. There are some that have a view of him and they compare him to prior ownership, and that's a difficult thing to have to combat."

Rowley said he understands why people would compare Sarver to Jerry Colangelo, who was very popular during the time he owned the team. However, he said a look at Sarver's record since he took over would indicate he's done a better job than people give him credit for.

"Yes, right now we're not where we want to be from a record standpoint, but if you dig down into where we are and what Lon and Lance have been able to accomplish with Robert's support to put us in a position to advance and to be a championship-caliber team moving forward, Robert's got a lot to do with that in terms of giving those guys the flexibility and empowering them to make those decisions."

    We have a president?
Once he stops getting on the radio being defensive and disagreeing that the fans are mad I might believe you. Until then he's been taking too many PR notes from David Stern. The last time the Suns missed the playoffs four times in five years my parents hadn't met yet. At this rate it's going to be a lot longer. How is this plan coming along gentlemen?

Sarver may be a nice guy but
Blanks, hunter, babby are not doing a respectable job for what thy are hired to do. Would love to hire some highly experienced and respectable people to run the organization.

Good luck convincing Suns fans of anything...
...after allowing Babby, Blanks & co. to create the Dan Majerle debacle. Going to the retro black jerseys that Thunder Dan helped make famous was especially endearing. I am personally inclined to agree with Gambo's on-air assessment, that BB&c. have pulled a snow job and deceitfully convinced Sarver to go along with their plan, but at some point, it comes down to Sarver as the owner making better decisions. Every Suns fan I know either outright hate Sarver or think he's a joke. Mostly the former.

    my thoughts
as for this year's record, I think this is what rebuilding looks like. We need a top pick in the draft. The coaching situation is laughable to the point of ridiculous. The Suns have alienated one of their famous players which is sad. The only positive thing about that is Hunter couldn't coach himself out of a paper bag, so we should be primed for that top pick. The result will do, but the path taken to get there sure could use some work. As for Sarver, he's made choices and taken actions that have drawn criticism. If he doesn't like his image he can change it through his actions.

    Discouraging
The Suns org was always known as a class act, but that reputation has evaporated! Now we hear the president talking (defensively!) about how well respected they are with their advertising partners. He talked about how great the rest of the fan experience is, the ushers, the concession stands. The bottom line is the fans are not paying $70 a ticket for the popcorn or the great ushers. Ultimately, the fans fill the arena and pay for the salaries that run the organization, its too bad the brass doesn't see the fans as one of the team's greatest assets. It's a discouraging time to be a Suns fan.

    Stop insulting us!
Stop saying we have no idea what we're talking about. Stop pretending like the fans are out of touch. Sorry but it's OWNERSHIP that is out of touch with the fans. Please, Robert Sarver call me and I will give you a nice piece of my mind. I have never met anyone who is a fan of Robert Sarver that isn't employed by him.

    Robert Sarver
Stereotypes die hard. I am not an employee, relative or friend of Robert Sarver, but I think he is making difficult decisions and trying to improve the team. Not extending maximum term and maximum money to Amare was not a popular move, but it was probably the smartest move he could make. I really liked Alvin Gentry and will always appreciate Dan Majerle, but I don't fault Robert Sarver for making the hard choice to hopefully elevate the team's prospects. We would all do well to give this owner a chance.

    You must be joking
Sarver is a bad owner. The PR arm of the Suns and the homers on this station may disagree, but it doesn't change the facts. In less than ten years owning the team, this clown has broken up two potential championship teams in order to save money. Now all the infrastructure Jerry put in place is gone and what you do have? A roster of garbage that is going nowhere fast, and no one left that is capable of building a team through the draft. What a joke.
