In the span of a weekend the Phoenix Suns fired the wrong guy and then they hired the wrong guy.

The whirlwind 48-hour so-called interview process that followed the surprising firing of head coach Alvin Gentry and subsequent hiring of Lindsey Hunter on an interim basis was nothing more than a charade. And make no mistake about it, Gentry was fired, it wasn't a mutual decision to part ways.

Neither Elston Turner and his 14 years of coaching experience or Dan Majerle and his five-plus years had a snowball's chance in hell of getting the job.

Not as long as general manager Lance Blanks, who has ruined this team with bad move after bad move, was still employed.

Blanks was always hiring his no-experienced buddy Hunter, whom he brought in not as a coach, but as a player development guy, who somehow was allowed to bark out instructions from behind the bench even though he wasn't on the coaching staff.

Blanks even told people at the time he hired Hunter not to be threatened by Hunter because he wasn't going to be coaching.

How loyal, experienced coaches who were next in line could be passed over by someone who has been here for just a few months tells you everything you need to know about Blanks.

The same Blanks who inked Michael Beasley to a three-year deal, but didn't want O.J. Mayo.

The same Blanks who traded Goran Dragic and a first round pick to Houston for Aaron Brooks.

The same Blanks who signed Eric Gordon to a max contract offer sheet with no chance of actually being able to land him.

Yes, that Blanks who appears to be in way over his head as a general manager just as president of basketball operations Lon Babby is at his position.

The reality is that Hunter would have been hard-pressed to get a job as a head coach in the D League but somehow was good enough, with no experience, to get the head job here.

Look, this is the worst hiring since Michael Jordan pegged Sam Vincent to coach the Charlotte Bobcats. It's downright ridiculous and proves that the Lance/Lon duo doesn't have a clue.

The players were asked there opinion and the majority wanted Majerle. Neither Majerle or Turner were at Sunday's practice and you can bet your bottom dollar they both will want out after witnessing this joke of a process. And that's a shame as both are qualified good basketball men.

The sad part is that the owner Robert Sarver, who at times gets a bad rep but desperately wants to win and has spent the money to win, has been snowed by the duo he now has in charge.

Hopefully by the off-season Sarver comes to his senses and will find the right people to run his organization.

The boys he has in charge now are running it into the ground.

    ahhh Gambo....
As usual, I find myself agreeing with you. This makes no sense, unless this is really just an interim move and they don't want to saddle Turner or Majerle with a half season of 6-35 basketball. I don't see the Suns winning 20 games this season, unfortunately. Thunder Dan deserves better.

in your assesement of the move but for one thing. You are giving Sarver far too much slack on this unless you think he has pudding for brains and cooked pasta for a spine.

    Right on Gambo
The days of prestige, integrity, winning and quality are no longer a part of any discussion on the Phoenix Suns organization and everything that Gambo says is spot on. While Sarver has spent money and declared he wants to win but the state of this team is a direct reflection of his leadership. I am embarrassed and disgusted by what the NBA basketball landscape has degenerated into here. Wonder what Jerry thinks of all this but he is too classy to publicly say so.

    Phil Jackson
I see that Phil Jackson will be taking a job in the front office of the new Seattle team. Too bad Sarver couldn't hire him to replace Babby. This team would be turned around very, very quickly with Jackson at the helm. He'd first hire a competent GM and would immediately bring respect to this once great franchise that has been lacking for so very long. Instead, I wouldn't be surprised if Sarver somehow retains both Babby and Blanks at season's end. Hopefully the season ticket holders voice their displeasure at the meeting set up by ownership and something is finally done.

    Don't worry Gambo
Hunter is just a stop-gap Coach. The Suns will be looking for better options during the off-season. Of course with the Three Stooges running the show they might just keep him because he did an "admirable" job. It's difficult being a Suns fan.

    I agree with Gambo
I agree with Gambo on this article. The FO has been horrible, we all understand that the Suns are in rebuild mode, but even in rebuild mode the FO has done a horrible job. Dont know if Sarver is as innocent in this all, in the end he was part of the main decision to hire these 2 idiots. Sarver if you really want to win it starts in the FO, get those 2 knuckles heads out so they stop hiring their friends and get people who actually have the interest of the team in mind.

    Agreed
I usually find it hard to agree with you but dead on here. Suns brass have made mistake after mistake after mistake. I simply do not get the moves Blanks and Babby make and there is a plan behind it, it must be to hit absolute rock bottom by alienating the fan base. Until these idiots go, I have given my last dollar and time to this organization. I hope I can come back some day.

    Blanks/Babby/Sarver
Are a JOKE. They have taken one of the most respected NBA teams, one of the most exciting with the most loyal fan base, and have run it into the ground. How they passed up Dan Majerle is beyond baffling. I hate this move, I loathe the front office, I despise the way Sarver has repeatedly made the wrong decision. Lance Blanks needs to be fired immediately. Get rid of Babby too. I blame Sarver for losing Steve Kerr. He was the best thing that happened to this team. Sell the team Sarver. Please, sell this team.
