Alvin Gentry is no longer the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, as it was announced Friday that he and the team have decided to part ways.

The Suns lost 98-94 to the Milwaukee Bucks at US Airways Center Thursday night. The defeat, their fourth straight at home, dropped the Suns' record to a Western Conference-worst 13-28.

Gentry was in his fifth season as head coach of the Suns and had compiled a record of 158-144. The 58-year-old became the coach of the team in February of 2009 on an interim basis when Terry Porter was fired in his first season on the job. Gentry guided the Suns to an 18-13 mark the rest of the season. He was given the job on a permanent basis following the completion of the 2008-09 season

Undoubtedly, the finest moments of the Gentry era came in the 2009-10 season when the Suns reached the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. Los Angeles would go on to defeat the Boston Celtics to win the NBA championship.

The Suns have missed the postseason in three of the last four seasons and are very much in danger of doing so again this season.

The Suns don't play another game until next Wednesday when they travel to take on the Sacramento Kings.

    Too bad...
I like Alvin Gentry and think he's a good coach. It's not his fault that this team doesn't have the talent to compete. Unfortunately this team needs to start over from scratch. Time to fire up the trade machine and get somebody who can put up 20 points a game on a regular basis. Someone that they can give the ball to in the clutch to get some big buckets. Then see if you can find someone to build around in the draft or Free Agency this summer.

    JOKE
I stopped watching the NBA and especially the Suns when Amare and Nash left. This team has been run into the ground and now they have finally hit rock bottom. Sarver needs to jump off a cliff. What a waste of talent. Feel Sorry for all that have suffered through his horrible mistakes.

who thinks that this team is underacheiving? They have individual talent, they just haven't learned to play as a team. That falls on coaching.

    Gentry
Thanks to Alvin Gentry for the job he did. I liked him as a coach but this team does need to rebuild and unfortunately he is part of that rebuilding process. Lets hope Lakers don't make the playoffs so we can have two lottery picks and hopefully sign a free agent next year that we can count on for some much needed scoring. I remember when we were rebuilding and traded away Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway but I felt comfortable those days since we had Colangelos running the show. Unfortunately, I don't have that faith with this group of knuckleheads that are currently running the show.

Not Much Class Left in Phoenix
Ok, Alvin wasn't the best coach in the world but he wasn't the problem. It sure feels like the Bidwills are running the Suns now. Sarver is almost as bad. Babby and Blanks are mediocre at best but the fault lies from decisions the last 2-3 years and it started when Brian Colangelo left and Sarver brings in these clowns. Jerry Colangelo we miss you.

    Great Move Babby!!??
You are the one that brought all of those guys to Phoenix that cannot play the game so you fire Gentry! I for one am happy for Alvin as he sure deserved more than this. Without an extension EVERYONE with a brain had to know that Babby was going to fire him sometime during the year.

You can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh... I used to think that Sarver was a decent owner. Now I think he is a blooming idiot! Babby and Blanks have really contributed nothing!! No reason at all to support this product. Waste of money! If they really want to figure out what is wrong, they need to start by looking in the mirror!

    He didn't get fired...
I think Gentry left on his own and didn't get fired. He wanted to step down. His comments of late have showed that he gave up on them already.
