Former Texas receiver Jaxon Shipley hoping to ‘find a spot somewhere’ with Arizona Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. — Jaxon Shipley had quite a career at the University of Texas, catching 218 passes for 2,510 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He did not get selected in the NFL Draft, though, and made his way to Arizona to play for the Cardinals. There, he is competing for a roster spot at arguably one of the deepest and most talented position groups on the team.

“I just think the coaches here are great,” Shipley said Tuesday when asked why he chose to sign with the Cardinals. “I love their offense; I felt like, in some way or another, hopefully I can find a fit here and whether it’s on special teams or playing in the slot or whatever it is, hopefully I can find a spot somewhere.”

The 6-foot, 190-pound Shipley is one of 10 receivers currently with the Cardinals, and it is not unreasonable to assume Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, John Brown and J.J. Nelson will still be here Week 1. The team finished with six wideouts on the roster last year, meaning the other six may be vying for just two spots.

The 22-year-old said he knew he would be joining a crowd, but felt good enough about the situation and feels like he can learn from his new teammates.

But for Shipley, who finished his college career ranked third on UT’s all-time list for receptions and sixth for yards, making the team will require more than just being able to catch the ball, even though that skill certainly doesn’t hurt.

“He’s quick as a cat and he’s got really good hands,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. “He’s bright. If he can find a niche on special teams as maybe a gunner, punt returner, something in that neighborhood, he’s going to have a chance.”

A chance is really all a player can ask for.
