With the final overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals picked up former Louisville tight end Gerald Christian.

Being the final selection of the draft earns him the title of “Mr. Irrelevant,” and all the fanfare that comes with it.

“It feels great,” he said with a chuckle. “I never expected it. In 20 years I’ll be able to say I was Mr. Irrelevant.”

Of course, Christian is hoping to be more than just Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL, a footnote at the end of another draft.

At 6-foot-3, 244 pounds, Christian earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2014 while starting in 11-of-13 games.

“I think I’m pretty well-rounded as far as a tight end,” he said. “I think I can block, I think I can catch. I know that I’m smart and I’m ready to contribute, whether it’s special teams or anything.”

Over the last two seasons at Louisville, Christian caught 60 passes for 810 yards and nine touchdowns. But the Cardinals seem to have a different role in mind for their seventh-round pick.

“They told me I’m very versatile, they like me as more of an H-back,” he said. “Because a lot of the different things I can do, I haven’t had a specific role. At the end of the day, I still have to earn my spot. But I know I can contribute as an H-back with the skill set that I have, and I’ve also got to contribute on special teams.”
