TEMPE, Ariz. — Not long ago, Tyrann Mathieu’s goal was to return to game action Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers.
With the Monday Night affair just a handful of days away, his tone has changed a bit.
“You know, I think about two weeks ago I just stopped looking that far,” he said of a Week 1 return being the goal. “I just kind of want to handle the day, get through the day. And then focus on the next day, so I don’t know.”
Thursday was a big day for Mathieu in terms of his prospects of being ready to go, as the second-year defensive back finally got to put the pads on and hit some people. The results were mixed.
“He tackled about four or five times,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said of how Mathieu fared. “Missed three and tackled three or four. So it’s new to him again.”
When asked if Mathieu’s effort Thursday was a good sign, Arians joked that it was good Mathieu made a few tackles because he would have been “really pissed” if he missed on all his attempts.
Mathieu said any struggles he had Thursday had more to do with rust than anything else.
