Report: Cardinals LB John Abraham arrested, charged with DUI in Georgia in June

Jul 29, 2014, 3:19 AM | Updated: 3:20 am

News broke Monday on a late June arrest of Arizona Cardinals linebacker John Abraham for driving under the influence in suburban Atlanta.

CBS Sports says DeKalb (Ga.) County online court records show Abraham was charged with DUI and stopping, parking or standing in a prohibited place. He was booked into jail at 5 p.m. on June 29 and released about five hours later.

Abraham has not been at training camp practices, but coach Bruce Arians said that he has the team’s blessing to be absent. At this point, it’s unclear if Abraham’s arrest has anything to do with why he’s not in camp.

Before Abraham’s arrest came to light, general manager Steve Keim spoke to Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Monday morning and briefly touched on the outside linebacker’s absence.

“I’m not concerned at all,” Keim said. “He’ll be back at some point here.”

CBS Sports says Abraham has been arrested for DUI before. The first charge came in 2003 while he was a member of the New York Jets. In that incident, he crashed his vehicle into a fire hydrant and a light pole. He pleaded guilty to that charge.

The 36-year-old linebacker is first among all active NFL players with 133.5 sacks in his career. In his first season in Arizona, he played in all 16 games and recorded 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and 37 overall tackles.

Abraham played eight years with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Cardinals in 2013, which might explain why he was in Georgia when he was arrested last month.
