The Arizona Cardinals placed defensive back Tyrann Mathieu and defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list Wednesday afternoon.
Mathieu, who is entering his second year in the NFL, is still recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL he suffered in a Week 14 win over the St. Rams last December.
In his rookie season, Mathieu registered 68 total tackles and had two interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery.
Ta’amu, 23, tore his ACL two weeks later in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Ta’amu had seven tackles and started three games a year ago for the Cardinals.
By placing the players on the PUP list before training camp, the Cardinals have the option to keep them there when the regular season begins. If a player is on the PUP list when the regular season starts, he must stay there for six weeks before returning.
Veterans report to training camp in Glendale Friday.
