The Arizona Cardinals will have at least one more position to fill on their coaching staff.

Deshea Townsend, who just finished his second season as the team's assistant defensive backs coach, is leaving to be the defensive backs coach at Mississippi.

He tweeted the news, more or less, Friday.

Townsend was added to the Arizona staff shortly after defensive coordinator Ray Horton was hired. While some may view his defection as a sign Horton is not going to replace Ken Whisenhunt as head coach, it could just be a chance for Townsend to progress in his career as a coach.

    It may be interesting
to see their replacement for Townsend. I just hope that Ray Horton has some input one way or another. And I hope whomever it is, will fill the void thoroughly. We may get to see Keim's GM decisions at work before a HC position is filled.

    Loss of Deshea Townsend
This is not good. It must look to the defensive staff as if the front office is waiting for Denver to finish its playoff run. At that point, apparently, McCoy will be offered the job. Ray Horton needs to be treated right. Waiting for a less proven commodity who will not be embraced by the defense is a bad move. The time to hire Ray Horton is now. If he does not excel for the Cards as an HC, he will eventually excel for another team and we will, again, be left to regret what could have been.

    "less proven commodity"..?
How is McCoy any more or less proven as a head coach? He's got an extensive resume and has proven to cater offenses to their quarterbacks (Orton's career year in 2009.. and heck he went to the playoffs with Tebow under center). Certainly not saying Horton or McCoy is the better person for the job, but to say that Horton is "more proven" is absurd.

    Townsend
If your rooting for Ray Horton to be HC (like myself) losing Townsend is not a good sign. I was figuring that Horton would promote Townsend to DC. I am not sure what is going on but its obvious the Cards are waiting until the playoffs are over to interview more canidates. I hope we still manage to keep Horton through all this nonsense. Seriously! Why wont you hire him? Just because he's a defensive minded coach? That doesnt mean anything! He has a smart and sound football mind. Obviously the Cards feel he's not the HC they wna hire, otherwise, they would have done it by now.

    Agree with you, DZAZ99
Horton vs. McCoy - it's a wash in terms of their experience. I also can't see why Dbaylesjr assumes McCoy "will not be embraced by the defense". There's no evidence of that. As far as the hire of Horton, I said it on another story - Horton has had 3 interviews this year plus I believe one last year. If he was such a lock to be a good head coach, why did the first 4 guys not hire him? They probably know something we don't.

    Thoughts. They need a week.
The FIRINGS around the NFL might not be over. What if Texans lose this week? What if Atl loses this week? What if Denver loses this week? All these teams have coaches, that may lose their job or be available for iviews/hiring down the road. And, speaking to them now may not be permitted for whatever reason. So, it may behoove the Cards to be patient, as well as Horton, to see who comes available to put the best combination together. However, they cant wait too long. Its no secret that AZ is not the 'Dream' org to work for and I doubt its the first place coaches WANT to go.
